We all have busy lives, and we rarely prioritise our state of mind. In order to make it a priority, we need to set aside time each day to practice, for it to become second nature. It could be 1 minute per day, and it could look like this:


• Take time out every day to be still with your bump. • You can set an alarm if you find it easier, for 1, 2, 5 or however many minutes you’d like to be present for.


• Notice your entire body. How it is holding your beautiful bump. Your feet on the floor, where your hands are resting.


• Feel your breath. Follow the sensation of your breath as it goes out and as it goes in.


• Notice when your mind has wandered. Inevitably, your attention will leave the sensations of the breath and wander to other places. When you get around to noticing this—in a few seconds, a minute, five minutes—simply return your attention to the breath.


• Be kind to your wandering mind. Don’t judge yourself or obsess over the content of the thoughts you find yourself lost in. Just come back.


The key is to practice daily so that eventually, your ability to bring yourself into the present moment is a natural reflex for you, as soon as you start to think too far into the future and about situations that are out of your control. And I promise, that if you master this for pregnancy and birth, it will also serve you very well for parenthood too!
