Air Travel with Babies & Young Children

With the thought of some warmer climates and sunshine, travelling abroad is our only option! Here are some top tips:

1. Preparation is Key! - Beforehand, create packing lists for hand luggage AND suitcases, appropriate to where you are going (think climate, types of activities etc).

Must-Have Items:

• A pashmina or large baby muslin can be used as an extra layer for baby, a wrap for you or a cover if breastfeeding.

• A child-friendly necklace. Halia Rose Jewellery is super- durable, chewable and washable so is perfect for travelling with. It can also be a great sensory toy for babies to play with, keeping them occupied for part of your journey or in queues.

• Baby Sling / carrier – Essential for walking the aisles with a baby! • Kindle – Easier to handle with one hand than a book!

• iPad – There is definitely a time and a place for technology and an aeroplane is one of them! Pre-load the iPad with their favourite programmes so there will be something they like to watch.

• Toys – Buy a few cheap things so it doesn’t matter if you lose them down the side or under seats! Wrap as individual presents to unwrap, adding to the excitement! Pack stickers and drawing materials to create stories or games and use the stickers to bring it to life.

2. What to Wear - Pack layers and changes of clothes for your children and YOU! If travelling with a baby, pack enough nappies (one per hour of travel time plus a few extra!).

3. Bags Inside Bags - One bag is easier to carry but it can be difficult to find what you need! Pack changes of clothes, nappy changing, snacks, toys etc into separate zip bags so you can easily grab what you want.

4. Ask for Help If You Need It - Most airline crew will hold baby if you need to get something from your bag or will offer to watch your children if you need to pop to the bathroom! Just ask!

5. Sleep - Do the same as you would do at home: milk, read a story, into their pyjamas (and sleeping bags if you use them) and tell them it’s time for bed. Be as calm and “boring” as possible so they aren’t over-stimulated. And don’t forget Teddy!

6. Snacks & Meal Times - Pack age-appropriate snacks (small things like cornflakes without the milk, blueberries, dried fruit, crackers etc. Order children’s meals! Ask for your meal at a separate time to your children, so you can help them, then have yours hot too!
