Dynamic development of a new market Foiling dinghies have become well-established in the past 15 years since the advent of the first flying Moth, but to date the foiling experience has largely been the preserve of the most athletic sailors of above- average ability. That need not be the case, however. Today the Scow is experiencing a comeback. The Skeeta hull is
based on the Australian ‘tunnel’ scow shapes that once dominated the Moth class, but optimised for foiling. The scow is inherently much more stable than a pencil-thin Moth skiff but is still extremely fast. Quant Boats enjoy an established reputation for delivering foiling
in a more usable package. Down under in Melbourne our partners in this venture, James and David French, enjoy a similar reputation for practical solutions, with the benefit of many years of designing and building successful Moth designs. Then to get us all airborne in the most practical way we turned to Ian Ward and Glide Free Design (issue 415). We think the combination worked well. On the water the Skeeta is characterised by excellent all-round
speed – while always staying well-behaved. Easy foiling in the lower to medium wind range and controlled and fast sailing in very light or very strong winds when you will normally sail the boat without foils – the horizontal foil elements being quickly and easily removed. Meanwhile, the choice of a scow-shaped hull makes for a very

freeboard is minimal and the boat floats level, getting back onboard is no harder than on a Laser. No more eye-popping, ‘I am swimming and my boat is pointing at the sky’ moments; entertaining but for the less skilled these can quickly get tedious. So the Skeeta is suitable for beginners, for foiling training, for leisure and just for fun. Flying height, for example, is infinitely variable and easily adjusted
while sailing; simply slide the control wand up or down the bracket. Novices will initially fly as low as possible before cranking up to full height as they become more confident. And if you are caught out by the conditions changing then the vertical lift on the main foil can simply be dialled down to zero to return to shore in conventional sailing mode.
