8 Read – or weep Finn sailor Miguel Ángel Morales (inset) is not in the mood for a flyweights-only Olympic regatta…

31 A wall of improvement Now that’s a comeback. ROB WEILAND

Better team clothing The Prada America’s Cup challenge of Patrizio Bertelli will do more than add style to the Auckland waterfront. Like another big figure in modern Cup history, Bruno Troublé, Bertelli is convinced it was a mistake to allow the event to drift so far away from almost 170 years of sporting heritage to chase commercial appeal. The Italian Challenger of Record got their way with a move back to big monohulls, which will expand the physical presence of the boats used in the Cup, while the Defender got their bit in by taking that fundamental decision and adding a major twist that is futuristic as well as technically extremely challenging. The last time the Cup was held in monohulls was in Valencia in 2007, at which point the boats used were extremely expensive to perfect but only marginally less competitiveness could be achieved on a much smaller budget; witness teams like +39 from Italy and Shosholoza from South Africa. Neither was ever going to win the Cup but both had good moments on the racecourse and attracted a big onshore fanbase. This time we have the combination of a monohull with a welcome drive to again use Cup yachts to advance development in relevant areas, like reefable wings, not to mention making advances in rarified areas like canting foils. But this comes at a cost, literally, that will preclude the return of small teams like the one put together by Frank Cammas with Groupama Team France in Bermuda. Does this matter? As Russell Coutts says, ‘The Cup is only ever between two or three teams.’ Then again the Cup in Valencia was the only Match that has ever handed back a surplus of funds to all of the competitors after the regatta

105 Sailor of the Month (Almost) too much talent to jam onto one page

There have been several new Mini 6.50 Protos launched this year though most eyes are on the new Series scows from David Raison. This is Marc Lombard’s latest Mini which shows more scow influence than a recent launching from Guillaume Verdier but with chines to fill out the hull volume in place of a scow’s softer curves. A different approach to the pursuit of offwind speed – and likely to be at its best in strong conditions
