separate from the Luna Rossa Team. That is Laurent’s domain and he will have other friends of ours who are old hands at the America’s Cup to help such as Matteo Plazzi and Luca Bassani. They know how things must work. Alessandra Pandarese is once again in charge of the legal aspects and Marko Groeschner is going to run marketing and sponsorship. The first day they all met up I have to admit that it wasn’t exactly

very friendly. They had raced against each other in the past and to be honest that first meeting was very aggressive. But eventually they worked it out and now they have a very good relationship… because they are smart. SH: Some of the preliminary races in 2019 will be in the Mediterranean where light winds are expected… PB:We are not worried. These boats will be foiling from 8kt upwards, so they lend themselves well to the Mediterranean. This also means that we can race in new places with less wind. The new rig where the sails can be taken down quite easily is a big help as venues do not need such big equipment to lift a wing in and out each day. The Acts will also help us try out new courses. We want speed,

of course, but we want good sailing, good racing. We are not going to push the speed to extreme limits – we would rather provide a better spectacle. We may wish to introduce a mandatory use of the gennaker on one leg of the course. We want some manoeuvring, some action on the water, not just technical brilliance. At the same time we want to protect the high level of technology that has been achieved so far. But instead of developing with the catamaran we will develop with the monohull. It is a true monohull, even though it has new features… SH: Really you want to rebuild the Cup with more of the flavour of the past? PB:When I was in Newport to be inducted into the America’s Cup Hall – a great honour, of course – I went to look at the stories of the 150 people who came before me, sailors, designers and owners who all put in their own little brick to build the America’s Cup. Right now my main idea is that we want the America’s Cup to shine again and we want to obtain that by getting all the people closer together, working together. Especially making closer links between the younger and older generations. SH: It certainly happened last time with Team New Zealand. PB: That is the sort of example we want to give people. The best young sailors and engineers wanting to do the America’s Cup. We respect the older sailors but take care to remember that the youngest team won the 35th America’s Cup, quite easily as it turned out. They had younger sailors and they pushed the designers and engineers to take risks. They had the courage to do that because they knew they were the best sailors of this generation.

Thank goodness we’ve still got plenty of bad boys among our readers… when our friends at Sailing Anarchy ran a series of old sailing ads we’re afraid that Seahorse featured strongly. This one elicited some rather non-PC quotes from readers, some of them surprisingly far up the food chain. The tone was summed up by one ‘well-known yachtsman’ whose anonymity we choose to maintain: ‘Mate, Seahorse should go back to those roots…’
