New Boats Table Tangy
Turkish builder MAT and designer Mark Mills rejoin forces with a contemporary-looking IRC offering that responds to the fast-accelerating interest in a return to all things offshore
MAT1340 The product of the latest collaboration between Mills Design and MAT Yachts is a mid-sized yacht developed to provide MAT with a flagship IRC design offering maximum competitiveness inshore and equally offshore. Because 44ft sits between smaller IRC yachts where a rating-centric typeform is predominant, and larger yachts like the TP52 where higher performance more than pays for the rating increase, it was necessary to understand at an early stage the trade-offs between the two solutions. Our R&D was undertaken as usual with KND when we fully explored both design avenues. The rating-centric model most prominently seen from French design-
ers combines a medium/light displacement with wide beam, fin keel and moderate sailplan and has been extremely successful, especially offshore, and is more amenable to racing offshore with reduced crew numbers. The high-performance model was drawn almost as a pure raceboat with minimal racer-cruiser input in order to deliver the light displacement required, with a deep bulb keel and a larger sailplan. Interestingly, when initially run using panel code CFD the perfor-
mance variations were not as strongly evident as they became after the RANS corrections for both hulls brought the elapsed time dif- ferences into sharp focus, highlighting the value of the more detailed RANS solutions even in mainstream designs without complexities like immersed transoms. When the rating spread of nearly 100pt was applied, corrected time performance tipped clearly in favour of the rating-centric solution, in this case at an IRC rating of 1.180. What emerged is a clean, simple design of contemporary styling,
combining the large cockpit desired for racing with a simple ‘sufficient’ interior to meet the needs of a modern family. The faceted sheerline with raked upper stem removes weight

from the deck edge and improves aero flow over the front half of the boat. We also think it looks rather good! The difficult balance of transverse jib tracks on the coachroof
conflicting with low mounted primaries is resolved with primaries mounted on the aft end of the coachroof, which also opens up the pit options significantly. The MAT1340 is offered with both single and twin rudder options,
allowing the buyer to mode the boat towards their preferred event: inshore racing benefiting from a single rudder, but offshore racing with more reaching benefiting from two. The powerful hull and manageable sailplan combined with the full bow volume ensure strong offshore performance even with reduced crews, reaching with a clear bow-up trim even in the first CFD runs. This is a new 44-footer that showcases modern IRC design while
affording owners a well thought out dual-purpose interior. This is our fourth project with MAT Yachts over 14 productive
years working together, starting with the consistently successful MAT12 in 2006. Since then MAT, led by owner Alp Somer, have become successful worldwide with their focus on high performance while always building boats in a cost-effec- tive manner – both being key to achieving wider success, as has been seen with certain other very successful IRC brands… mes amis. Scow hull, foils, daggerboards, telescoping canting keel, rudder T-foils and, and, and… The things you can do with plants, cork and recyclable Sicomin GreenPoxy resin. Nice effort Peter Morton enjoyed his sojourn in the class last year (or is bored with Fast40s) A nice-looking new IRC/ORC design from a brand new Brazilian yard – one to watch The new Lift40 is much more ‘scow’. Two boats building on opposite sides of the globe
August 2019 onwards A class 24-hour record in its first race… two launched to date with more on order Feb 2021
A one-off development of Crédit Mutuel. Sponsored by Volvo (Belgium) Boat no1 is for 1996 Olympic pole vault gold medallist Jean Galfione! Sleek and rapid-looking fast-cruising cat. They just keep a-coming
Contemporary-looking shorthanded tool par excellence with a full (light) interior Interesting commercial charter catamaran from a design team who know how it’s done
Redondo/Kramers/May/Dubois Heol/Multiplast/Lorima/Decision August 2019 onwards 15m by 11m, massive foils and rig and weighs in at 1,250kg. Tie that puppy down Persico
A fun flight over the Alps by skyhook from Persico and now in fit-out
First example of this very foxy Rán-styled IRC (affordable) series build is offshore-oriented IRC racer-racer-cruiser with influence from Carkeek’s rapid eye-catching Fast40s Full carbon racer-cruiser. That carbon fibre stuff is definitely catching on
We’d love to say more but life’s too short. She’ll have some beds and she’ll fly, adios! Verdier Imoca for The Ocean Race for 11th Hour Racing (and now it’s official) Switchback’s half-built boat for the next Ocean Race is available
Impressive-looking IRC cruiser-racer from an interesting but little-known design studio We know it looks stunning… and incorporates flax and wicker in the build Boat no1 of a series build of a new and stylish carbon lift-keel racer-cruiser The second British AC75 is in the water… so just ETNZ no2 to go
Interesting performance cruiser with foil-assist for righting moment and pitch-damping Carbon hull, deck, mast, rigging, sails, probably the loo as well. Just in time for next Christmas All of the pieces are steadily coming together in Brittany (where else – ed)
The hulls are at HQ in Lorient for assembly while François Gabart hits (all) the boardrooms The first one-off custom Superyacht from Swan. One to look forward to
Gorgeous. Classic pilot cutter looks allied with modern design and heavy eco focus The biggest yet from Persico. Very light at 171 tonnes. Hybrid power for silent running Big, fast and fruity-looking new cruiser-racer from Rolfie. Should launch regatta ready
