So how much trust did the American Magic management have in their team when for the second time they took a new AC75 aloft on its first day afloat (even Team NZ never risks that). Terry Hutchinson: ‘We went off the dock thinking that if the breeze filled in we’d have a good sail later. But straight away we came into 21 knots of pressure and we were into it. Despite having a brand new boat that we were all excited about, the whole session felt very normal. That’s a great validation of our shore team and all of the work put in since we first launched the Mule in 2018.’ Certainly bloomin’ is, we’d say. ‘We had a great nosedive too, and that was exciting, but it was nothing we haven’t seen or done on our other boats.’ Helm Dean Barker was a bit more circumspect: ‘she’s lively’ was all he said later. Of the V2 AC75s American Magic’s Patriot is closest to Prada’s second (and first) boat, though at press time we had yet to see Team NZ’s second AC75. That the Italians are building two quite similar designs looks encouraging – or a complete disaster. American Magic have built two different but conservative designs which is not surprising given Terry Hutchinson’s laser focus on time on the water. With 66 days’ sailing on their first AC75 to add to the 92 days they accumulated on their half-sized Mule only Team NZ may yet match their sailing hours. Is American Magic fast enough? If they really can get more out of their boat then fast enough could just do it... And that would be a first for the Cup

The event this year was a little quieter than usual – mainly in the Maxi classes, understandably wary after the last-minute cancellation of their preceding regatta in Porto Cervo. But 150 big boats at any event is excellent even in normal times and a just reward for the Société Nautique de St Tropez
