In 2014 Idbmarine presented the Mojito 888 which was to become the 2015 Sailboat of the Year. This high-performance little cruiser enjoyed a successful career and when we looked at her again five years later we decided there was little to change in the design but instead we decided to team up with Roland ‘Bilou’ Jourdain’s Kairos operation and pick up the eco challenge. And so the Virgin Mojito 888 was born. The challenge was therefore to: l replace glass fibres with linen l replace the Soric honeycomb core areas with cork l and replace the Corecell core with PET foam.


Why linen fibre? PET foam? Cork? The adoption of linen is the most significant step to reducing the boat’s carbon footprint – also the conventional glass fibres that linen replace come from the Asian petroleum chemistry. Conversely, linen fibre is cultivated and woven in France, and of course it is a renewable resource. Cork is another renewable resource produced in Europe, which replaces Soric, a polyester-based material. Finally PET foam is another recyclable material and with technical characteristics very similar to polymer-based foams. We are currently investigating the use of green resins but have


not yet identified a combination that meets our required combination of cost and technical suitability for our production. Interestingly the use of a linen/polyester composite does not require anything like the energy input of a conventional glass/polyester system. The use of linen/PET/cork also allows better working conditions for the builder, being much less ‘aggressive’ than fibreglass. And

although linen is undeniably harder to cut than fibreglass, it is more pleasant to the touch… And it smells really good! There is an overall increase of 50kg in construction weight which


we have saved with some interior updates. This super little boat still weighs only 2,900kg of which 890kg is in the centreboard-style lifting keel which allows secure drying out when you are cruising. In terms of build cost there is a small increase of around five


per cent which will steadily come down as these materials become more popular. Until then we are absorbing the increase ourselves with savings elsewhere. Final price… €100,000 ex-works.
