For Fabrice Cahierc it will have been an unusual journey when his second new Ocean Fifty is launched at CDK this spring. Cahierc took delivery of a new VPLP 50 back in 2020, almost immediately selling it to Erwan Le Roux who used the boat – in the colours of digital services company Koesio – to win class in the 2022 Route du Rhum. Meanwhile, Cahierc has been passing time crewing on a mixture of other ocean trimarans, including the Ocean Fifties… the same class he previously left so abruptly. All this time the French skipper has also been treating his
‘trimaran experiences’ as something of a science programme, keeping copious notes and hoovering up knowledge and ideas onboard boats owned by his future potential rivals… Because Cahierc had quietly made a decision to re-enter the class. The newest VPLP 50 looks outwardly similar to its predecessor,
with some external refinements around improving aerodynamics as well as improving protection for the crew. The bigger changes concern how this boat has been engineered and constructed. The 2020 Ocean Fifty that is now Koesio was designed from the
outset as a downwind flyer. The lightest 50 ever built, the boat was configured for offwind courses such as the Transat Jacques Vabre – in the last edition of which Koesio eventually finished as runner-up in the hands of Erwan Le Roux and Class40 expert Xavier Macaire. However, the new boat is no lighter than its skeletal predecessor,
rather the significant build weight that could have been saved with the benefit of three more years of technical development has been reinvested in creating a stiffer, stronger platform that will be better upwind as well as in heavy airs. As mentioned, there is new added focus on the quality of life onboard these fast and exciting but also violent and wet multihulls.

Taking more account of the skipper/crew has been a key priority in the Imoca and Ultim fleets for many years now, less so in the Ocean Fifty because the highest-profile class event is the annual series of inshore grand prix. On arrival in Guadeloupe this time the Ocean Fifty skippers were
unanimous that with better protection they could have sailed their boats faster and for longer. A history that includes far too many capsizes in oceanic events also does the class no favours; whether or not that was in part down to sailor fatigue, protecting the crews has certainly now moved up the list of design priorities. With growing confidence the Ocean Fifty is coming of age and
eight good boats started the 2022 Rhum. Interest is boosted with a sensible set of cost controls including a limit of one new set of sails every two years, a ban on carbon construction for new boats and the successful introduction two years ago of one-design foils. Cahierc’s boat came out of the tooling of its predecessor – which
