SLIPPING AWAY? – Sean Langman I read with interest and empathy your question regarding automated sailing. I have personally been a somewhat foolish advocate for winding winches and engineless yachting. It appears, however, the benefit in rating and righting moment now outweigh the purity of human effort. I have been blessed this past Australian offshore season to have
optimised my own Reichel/Pugh 69 Moneypenny. She has broken the dominance of TP52s in Australia by winning the Blue Water Pointscore under IRC, ORCi and, oddly, also the Performance Hand- icap System (PHS). Assuming PHS shows incremental gains over the last outing, then the team have done very well. Our threat this season has been the Reichel/Pugh 72 URM
(ex-Shockwave). URM moved to stored power while we remained with pedestals. My expectation was URMwould suffer a rating increase. Of interest
is her rating after being weighed again with the extra gear actually went down. Our crew of 12 would no doubt be better placed all on the rail – rather than half winding winches. Personally I believe stored power is almost at the point of being encouraged by IRC. At the other end of the scale, my son Pete and his crew’s effort
on Maluka in winning IRC Division 5 of the Hobart is about as pure as it gets. Gaff rig and no internet!
13,000 MILES AWAY To: IRC Manager, RORC, London Dear Sir I have been following the Sydney Hobart Race and its results with interest. I would like to request a rating review for the TP52 Celestial (owner S Haynes). – Russell Beale, Former Royal Yachting Association National Judge
Err, not quite As you are not an owner, fellow competitor, race organiser, designer, etc we are not in a position to process your request further in accordance with IRC Rule 9.2. If you need further information then please contact Australian Sailing and if they feel it is necessary they may request a further rating review… – The RORC
Not giving up yet ‘I’m a bit disappointed in the response as I think I meet the definition of an interested party. I will contact Australian Sailing, as suggested… (yahdeyahdeyah… enough!!! Ed)

There goes the neighbourhood, or at least the Sydney Hobart ORC prize for boats with dual IRC/ORC rating. When this picture appeared ‘friends’ of Sydney Hobart overall winner Celestial quickly pointed out that unlike IRC (which tries not to punish cost-effective speed producing features) ORC prohibits multiple headsails to be flown if a spinnaker is also hoisted. Celestial’s Sam Haynes did not seem too bothered as he withdrew from the ORC division… while drinking greedily out of the Tattersall Cup
l Yikes… cost for a new Mini 6.50 Proto is now around ⇔300,000 l Yet… at least 10 new Protos are on the way for the 2023 Transat with at least 35 Protos expected to line up l More than… 80 skippers are also already registered in the Series Division for this year’s race l Expect the patchy… and expensive appearance of foils in the class to be a big source of ‘discussion’ when the season gets going… l No No No!!… organisers of the Mini Transat resist ‘the siren call of fashion’ of a separate class for female soloists… l ‘We are actually… rather exemplary, treating the sexes the same… l ‘And perhaps… that is why we have so many lady skippers?’ l Concerned… maybe… l The only… 2016 Imoca in The Ocean Race – Guyot Environnement – may find themselves on their own and well behind the new boats on the 12,750nm Leg 3. Never a great look in the Southern Ocean l Then again… they may have the toughest boat in the fleet l Good news… they found the 50ft cat of Rhum competitor Brieuc Maisonneuve, rescued by Jean-Pierre Dick after a mid-race capsize l Bad news… they found her on a beach in Brittany… l What little… was left of her l Still improving… bravo to Eric de Turckheim and crew on their Nivelt-Muratet 54 Teasing Machine, winner of the RORC Transat l Bravo also… to young Trevor Davis (son of a member of this parish) and crew Rees Tindall who took out the 2023 Miami Snipe Invitational l Strong fleet… lots of other hungry and talented ‘sons/daughters of’ trying to spoil their day in the sun. Nice one, Trevor l Mind your backs… Australia, with Pete Burling’s SailGP Team NZ taking their third series victory at Singapore SailGP, those pesky Kiwis are getting better and better (as usual, tedious) l Kiwis’… average speed around the course in the last race… 53kph l That’s their average speed… (maybe not so average – ed) l Plus… Tom Slingsby is reported to be struggling to find funds to continue his Aussie team’s stunning success into the next series… l While… rumours spinning out of the sport-business industry suggest that the series itself could be up for grabs by anyone with deep enough pockets... l Sporty… new Imoca generation… l During… Ocean Race Leg 1 Kevin Escoffier’s Holcim PRB was sailing upwind at a steady 14kt+ in winds of 40kt l And yes… the angles were just fine, thank you, cynics l Bitch slap… in San Fran… l Did they slacken off… their closest rival’s lifelines overnight as a joke, or to get them thrown out? l We always… thought of the J105s as a nice family class l Talking… bitch slaps… l That old war story…who did what to whom, or paid what to whom, the 2019-2020 World Sailing leadership saga still rumbles on l As the original target… of numerous allegations Kim Anderson seems to be back in favour l Incoming pres… Li Quan Hai is being asked about the millions of dollars of financial support he promised WS in his pitch for office… l Still… offset against the absent millions are the fines being dished out for bad behaviour during the ‘investigation process’ l Largest fine to date… $1,100 (no zeros missing) l That should… cover it l Not again… to quote NATO, Bad Vlad’s ‘demonic empire lust’ could lead to a widespread international boycott of Paris 2024… l If the IOC… cannot find a way to avoid Russia and everyone else being at the same Olympic Games in one year’s time l Face it…. the IOC’s past form on this has not been great, especially under pressure… l Not that… today’s heinous warmongering Russian leader would stoop so low as to apply pressure l Farewell… sadly to designer and boatbuilder Charlie Morgan, whose wood 12 Metre Heritage was good enough to varnish… l And still be… varnished today l And also… to the brilliant Derek Kelsall, designer, builder, competitor and one of the pioneers of offshore multihull racing l Wanna Hobart… Ichi (3 Tattersall Cups) Ban is up for sale l You know where to go…
