It is absolutely certain that the 2020 Vendée Globe will eclipse the 2021 America’s Cup in terms of interest and excitement. An astonishing entry that would not disgrace a one-design regatta yet at the sharp end the campaign budgets are up there with the best Maxi72. Plus team staffing levels that run at least into the teens to send a solitary skipper


off around the world alone (although as competitors like to remind you, the Vendée Globe is among the most expensive races to start, but after that your expenditure stops very swiftly). This year’s event is like no Vendée before. Every four years, regard-


less, it seems, of the economy, a new generation of the most advanced offshore racers on the planet line up for a race that only 60 per cent or so will complete. This time, however, it is not just a new generation but a whole new world of boat types taking the start. Also this time, a new generation of Figaro sailors, schooled in tight


one-design racing in endurance events, has found the backing to put up a proper challenge to the established Vendée champions. The winner of the last Vendée Globe, Armel Le Cléac’h, demonstrated by winning the 2020 Figaro that there’s life in the old dogs yet, but there is no doubt that if (as we fervently hope) enough of the foilers stay intact then this is going to be an unusually tactical race especially on the complex legs up and down the Atlantic. Jacques Caraës, are the best there is. In the past they have demon- strated expertise and calmness dealing with major incidents. Even so, don’t be surprised for the 2024 Vendée to see staggered start times being considered – some discussion is already taking place. But do not be surprised also if competitors vote unanimously after

this race to veto the idea. These are the most determined ocean sailors anywhere. Finishing is prize enough for many, proud to be in the same race as the biggest names – a unique feature of the sport. I doubt such a change will happen. Adventure wins. Always.


Is this allowed? Philippe Jeantot’s sailing career did not end in a blaze of glory, involving the French courts, police, forensic accountants and tax inspectors (none of which ended well). But fair play, the walkaway two-time winner of the BOC invented the Vendée and for that at least a mention is acceptable?


Props To Armel Le Cléac’h obviously, because to come back and win the Figaro against a rampant hoard of ambitious and talented younger Figaristes, whose only goal for two weeks in September was to stop you, is frankly remarkable. Remarkable even to put yourself on the line as the current Vendée Globe champion.
