We have looked before at some of the small dual-purpose scow offerings coming out of France during the last few years. Mr Scow himself, David Raison, drew a successful line in fast pocket cruisers modelled on his racing Maxi 650 Mini Transat design which were marketed under the Mojito brand. Based on this successful Mini class racer, the Mojito 650 has proved a popular little family weekender with excellent sailing performance. It is manufactured by IDB Marine who also build Raison’s Maxi 650. The price is particularly competitive when compared with a larger design but with comparable volume and performance. Raison also enjoys success with his popular Revolution range of
aluminium scows ranging in length from 24 to 29ft. Anyone who appreciates the virtues of the iconic Ovni range of aluminium global cruisers, built by Alubat, will immediately spot the appeal of a smaller aluminium cruising scow. Robust, easily repaired and with much more volume than a ‘conventional’ design of the same size. It took years before the sailing world came to terms with yachts
with no long overhangs –a feature that now seems archaic. Similarly, the hostile reaction to the introduction of plumb bows – now the norm. So given the scow’s innate advantages, with many of the features most desirable in a cruising yacht, do not be surprised if the bulbous beasts of today become the default designs of tomorrow. More volume, drier decks, good sea-keeping, form stability, excellent sailing performance with high average speeds on long passages. Plus all that interior volume and usually extra headroom. Many will be dragged kicking and screaming towards ‘the next
big thing’. But we’d wager that in 15 years no more attention will be paid to the launch of a new production scow than is paid today to the average cruiser. A 30ft scow offers similar internal volume to a regular 35-footer.
The maths works pretty well, whether in build time and cost, mooring fees or the cost of the equipment required to manage her under sail or propel her under power.

And then we come to the Mirabelle 16 (above)… leader of the
pack, or should we call her The Boss? A scow in concept but she is far too heavy and ‘blunt’ to merit the label other than in the absence of an alternative. But the dimensions are there, even if the displacement is not! Sixteen metres long, 6m wide and with 2m of freeboard delivering massive internal volume, this twin-keel, all electric propulsion Eric Prang design built for a globetrotting industrialist deserves a second look. The appearance is crude but some of the detail is sophisticated. Add-ons for the long-distance yachtsman include an integrated
compressed air system that powers all the functions normally associated with hydraulics… Lighter, cleaner and easier to repair in remote areas. And you can fill your dive tanks too! The Mirabelle 16 is of course a brute of a boat, and any serious
production scow would be half the weight for starters. But still a portent of things to come…
