Perfectionist engineer Max O’Meara re-threads the spar tube of Courageous in Newport at the 1980 America’s Cup having decided the mainsail track is not snug enough for his tastes
Commodore in Eric de Turckheim, who has provided sage advice and a top-class sparring partner on Teasing Machine. His stand- out success was to win the Rolex Middle Sea Race last year, while our own was finishing second in the 2021 Fastnet. This tradition will continue with our new Commodore Deb
Fish and Vice Commodore Richard Palmer, regular and suc- cessful competitors on Bellinoand Jangadarespectively. While sailing double-handed, they have both raced successfully in our main series with Jangada winning the Jazz Trophy for the RORC Season’s Points Championship last year and Deb and Rob Craigie’s Bellino winning the same trophy this year. Ino Noirhas a full programme for 2024 starting with Antigua
and the RORC Nelson’s Cup Series and Caribbean 600. We are most looking forward to the Antigua 360 – where last year we prevailed after a particularly exciting spinnaker surf around the top of the island. We then head home for the Round Ireland Race after which we will study our options to compete for a place in the 2025 Admiral’s Cup. It has been a privilege serving such a prestigious
and well-respected club, and I have had the oppor- tunity to visit some interesting places and have met some wonderful people. I would like to thank you all for your support, suggestions, good wishes – and of course for reading my monthly column!

of the first Rolex Fastnet Race finishing in Cherbourg. The key global differentiator for our club is our offshore race
T
programme which attracts entrants from all over the world. Indeed our biggest classic events such as the Myth of Malham and St Malo Race enjoy some of the world’s largest race entries. Critical to our programme are the classic 600-milers led by the Rolex Fastnet Race – which last year attracted over 450 yachts. The expectations of our owners, their crew, supporters,
sponsors and society itself increase every year, as our excellent race team and all involved know only too well. I am confident we are up to this challenge, as exemplified by the investment we have made in the SailRaceHQ system; meanwhile, the RORC is making upgrades to our clubhouse in Cowes precisely to ensure we have an appropriate venue for the events there. Throughout my tenure I have been supported by flag officers
and a committee who compete regularly in our races. This gives us a unique perspective on what is important to remain relevant and continue delivering the best offshore racing in the world. I have also been fortunate to have had an excellent Vice
he three years of my term as Commodore finishes at the end of 2023 with my last duties being our RORC Season prizegiving and AGM. It has been an intense and interesting few years, with my first tasks being to find a new CEO, implement a governance review and make sure we delivered on the promise
