IT’S A WRAP – Terry Hutchinson The late fall had some highs and lows, ClubSwan 50s and the ending of a TP52 era with American Magic/Quantum Racing. ClubSwan 50 a solid high. Racing with Marcus Brennecke aboard
the CS 50 Hatari was a great experience. Competing against 12 teams in Scarlino, we faced great conditions and tight, bow-on-bow racing throughout the week. Joining this team was novel; I found myself racing alongside sailors I had previously competed against in the TP52 Super Series, like Micki and Gert from Platoon, as well as meeting some great and talented new young sailors. Brought onboard by owner Marcus and project manager Michele
Ivaldi, Daggy, Sean and I stepped into a finely tuned machine with Hatari. Marcus took great care of the team, ensuring we had every- thing we needed to succeed. Although we lacked a bit of time and performance as we learned the new platform and developed our boat speed, the experience was a lot of fun. We were rewarded with a silver position, as we couldn’t quite
match Early Bird for pace. However, we kept pushing and asking the question of Early Bird to the end. For any owner or team considering the CS 50 circuit, it’s an
absolute win. The ClubSwan 50 circuit offers fun both on the water and ashore, with the CS 50, CS 36 and CS 28 classes sharing courses and shoreside activities. All in all, a great week. Highs and lows. After Scarlino we returned to Porto Cervo and the YCCS to conclude the final event of the 2025 TP52 Super Series
and an 18-year campaign with American Magic Quantum Racing. The 2025 season saw more things go right than wrong. AMQR finished with a record of 3, 1, 1, 1, 7 across the five events, earning the team’s seventh Super Series title. Team owner Doug DeVos helmed the final event. Despite a
challenging start with tactical issues on the first day, we managed to pull through. Porto Cervo provided epic conditions, including mistral winds, light-air racing in Bomb Alley and a final day filled with thunderstorms offering the fleet a bit of everything. As they were three years ago, in similar conditions, Sled were
incredibly fast and dominated, winning the final event and taking silver for the season championship. Helmsman Tony Norris aboard Hasso Platner’s Phoenix finished the Phoenix programme with a second place, while Andy Sorriano’s Alegre, with tactician Paul Good- ison, secured third. It was great to see Alegre battle onto the podium. Andy and his team always show up, and their hard work and per- sistence were rewarded at this event. It was wonderful to witness! Eighteen years have come and gone! First and foremost, I want
to extend a massive thank you to Doug and Maria DeVos for every- thing they have done for the Quantum Racing family. It has been an unparalleled journey! Reflecting on the early days of Quantum Racing, I can’t help but think of us as the island of misfit toys. Each sailor with something to prove and in the end over the course of those 18 seasons the team captured seven world championships, seven Super Series titles and one Med Cup championship before that. The racing in that first 2008 season was epic: 20 boats, masthead
zeros, coastal races and a newly designed Botín/Carkeek 52 pushing the boundaries on generation 7 of design. Quantum Racing led in many ways that year, winning both the season and the world championship. Yet the racing in 2025 was equally intense. Racing with Harry
Melges (H4!), Sara, Vic, Norm, Ian, Lara, Luke and our younger squad brought new energy to this sailor. The same energy of that 2008 season. So many great opportunities while I had the chance to drive, be tactician, and throughout work alongside some great teammates.
