Scotland forum makes successful debut

MONG the highlights of the two- day event were presentations from leading players in the sector. Ann Allen, Executive Director of Estates and Commercial Service, University of Glasgow, talked about her university’s proposals for the £1bn capital investment in the Gilmorehill campus and how this is acting as a catalyst for development of the West and Waterfront Innovation District. Lyle Chrystie, of the Edinburgh-based architects Reiach & Hall explained how it’s


possible to take legacy buildings that are no longer fit for purpose and modernize them in a way that is sustainable and also meets today’s students’ expectations for their learning environment Gordon Reid, Regional Business Development Manager for Scotland at the contractor Kier, discussed Kier’s work at the £32m new build Alness Academy. Alex Donaldson, of Scott Brownrigg, talked about digital data and the Internet of Things, and explained why digital is so important for education facilities.

Our first Education Building Forum Scotland, held near Edinburgh in May, proved a great success with a large audience of architects, contractors, consultants and suppliers enjoying in-depth discussions of the latest built-environment issues in education


Gary Hoggs, of Baker Hicks, enlightened us on how his company has been using BIM models to provide an immersive experience for its clients using Virtual and Augmented Reality, and showed how the technology can be incorporated through various stages of a project. Kevin Laing of AECOM, talked about the SCAPE BECS Framework, which offers a comprehensive suite of design and construction consultancy services. Henry McKeown, of JM Architects, looked at how we should design school buildings to encourage and support more meaningful outdoor learning… And Ian Van Duivenbode, Head of Sustainability & Building Physics, Scotland, at Ramboll, explained the implications of the recent update to BB101, and how this sits with the Scottish Government’s plans to achieve an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2009 by 2050.
