thought went into creating a hushed environment for learning as into the rest of the £48m Priority School Building development. Haslingden-based noise and vibration control specialist TVS Acoustics was brought in to work alongside the main contractors and architects to help deliver state-of-the-art solutions to the school’s everyday noise issues. TVS was selected by Wates
Construction and architects Jestico + Whiles to devise a variety of innovative solutions capable of handling everything from the high-pitch chatter of the primary school classrooms to the feet- pounding exertions of the sports hall. In the classrooms, TVS ABSorb Panels,
featuring a highly sound-absorbent glass fibre core wrapped in an acoustically transparent fabric, provided an aesthetically pleasing answer to reverberating sound. With a choice of up to 80 different fabric face colours and a wide variety of installation methods, TVS ABSorb Panels offered a solution that could be manufactured to the bespoke sizes required. More importantly, they delivered the highest, Class A, sound absorption rating as well as high fire- resistant properties. But the acoustic work wasn’t confined
to classrooms at Eastbrook. Music and drama rooms along with the school’s new spacious sports hall also benefited from the work carried out by TVS Acoustics in two separate phases. In the music and drama rooms, TVS ABSorb Panels once again blended seamlessly with the

modern design of the new building and ensured maximum sound absorption. They also offered durability and easy cleaning. Meanwhile, TVS was able to utilise its
specially-developed ABSorb Sport panels in the school’s sports hall. The lightweight panels line the walls of the hall in long strips and are impact-resistant having undergone extensive testing for their use within sports halls, indoor five-a-side pitches, gyms and multi-use sports and event centres. In addition to their sound- deadening qualities, the panels are amongst only a few able to resist impacts from sports balls to a test standard of DIN 18032-3. Their versatility also allows them to be installed at low levels in areas where traditional acoustic panels would normally be subject to knocks and damage. TVS Project Director Chris Taylor
believes the acoustic solutions at Eastbrook
have added substantially to the quality of the school’s facilities. “Whether at work in the classrooms, performing in the music and drama areas or playing in the sports hall, pupils at Eastbrook benefit from an enhanced acoustic experience,” he explained. “As school design and construction has developed and improved over the years so has the ability to reduce unwanted noise and vibrations to improve the overall studying/play experience and maximise the potential of buildings. As a British company, TVS Acoustics is now very much at the forefront of utilising new materials and new technologies to help schools and colleges make the most of investments such as the Government’s Priority School Building Programme at Eastbrook.”
