Unite general secretary Len McCluskey and London Mayor Sadiq Khan joined London bus drivers in January at the launch of the Licence for London, – which will recognise bus drivers’ years of service and experience by maintaining their pay, terms and conditions if they change operators within the capital.

It marks a major step forward in ending SECURITY WORKERS

Real deal at SEAL

Unite security workers contracted to work for global media and finance firm Bloomberg in London have secured a remarkable set of improved terms and conditions.

The workers, employed by SEAL security have seen the end of zero hours’ contracts and will finally be paid for their 15-minute daily briefings before their shifts.

The victory comes after a demonstration held last October outside of Bloomberg headquarters in central London.

“The wins we’ve secured at SEAL are huge,” said Unite organiser Janet MacLeod. “Not only have they stopped the use of zero-hours contracts – they’ve given them full-time contracts – a full 40 hours. The implications of this win are massive for the entire industry.”

A new organising drive has seen many workers once afraid to be part of the union start to join up in droves. “Our members have won this themselves, through their sheer determination and tenacity,” MacLeod added.

‘Fantastic’ – McCluskey and Khan at Licence launch FOOD AND AGRICULTURE Find out more HERE Poultry jobs at risk

Unite said it would fight to save jobs and stop the closure of three poultry plants after 2 Sisters Food Group announced plans in February, to close its Cambuslang, Smethwick and Wolverhampton, putting 900 jobs at risk.

The union said it would now enter consultation with the company and press the case for investment and alternatives to the planned closures in a series of meetings with the company over the coming days and weeks.

“These plans have caused a lot of 7 uniteWORKS Spring 2018

uncertainty and dismay for the workers involved,” said Unite national officer for food Joe Clarke. “Unite will be doing everything it can to support our members and secure their futures following this announcement.”

the race to the bottom – and follows another deal last year which established a minimum pay rate for drivers at £23,000 annually.

McCluskey and Khan together with bus drivers celebrated at the Merton Bus Garage – where the London Mayor’s father worked as a bus driver. “This is a great example of trade unions working

with TfL and bus operators to improve terms and conditions for drivers – and it also leads to a better service for passengers as well,” Khan said.

“The Licence is fantastic,” said Len McCluskey. “It’s about treating workers with respect and dignity and will retain knowledge and expertise on London’s roads.”
