ve hope…’
Ellen Morrison, Unite Community South East London “Our branch launched last November and we now have around 300 members. People who were never involved in trade unionism before are active and engaged in community activism and politics.
“They are joining as a direct result of Tory austerity. People are turning their despondency on its head and fighting back. The election gave us hope, as does being part of something that’s working for change.”
David Carr, recovery care nurse Guys’ and St Thomas’ NHS Trust “What gives me hope and what’s been the buzz around the hospital is people see that politics have changed. The austerity project is dying, people can see that quite clearly now, especially after the election and the Grenfell Tower fire.
“The veil has dropped for NHS workers – people are angry at the funding cuts, the scrapping of the nursing bursary and the fact we haven’t had a pay rise for seven years. Even the doctors are radicalised. Things have shifted dramatically and it feels like there’s going to be change.”
Dennis Pearce, Unite Community Camden “Things are difficult for people – they’re being pushed out. They want hope and change and Labour is the party to deliver that. Being a part of Unite Community also gives me hope. We have all sorts of people of all ages and from different walks of life coming together with a common focus to make things better for everyone.”
Rev William Sharpe, hospital chaplain Guy’s Hospital “I’m always hopeful and optimistic. I think
even in disaster something good can come, though people might disagree with me. I try and see the silver thread in anything that happens, and follow that through to a positive end.
“After the attacks I saw that they brought us together and we were able to support one another. On a personal level it gives me hope that God enabled me to be strong enough to serve those who have met disaster.”
Taylor Humphris, Unite campaigns assistant London “I have hope for the future of LGBT+ Community because of how much we have changed over the years; the feeling of fear has disappeared and replaced with the feeling of being free, loud and proud.
“I have hope that if we stick together like we have I will one day be taking my own child who will have two mummies along to a Pride event, to celebrate and spread love and glitter all over the world!”
Jack Wilfan, Unite Community Western-super-Mare “I’m 16 and I want a better future. The Tories are not offering me that. I’m angry and I want change. Jeremy Corbyn is offering hope. We need better housing, better jobs and a better education system. No one else but Labour is interested in delivering those things.”
