SOAPBOX Special ‘Why I hav
We ask Unite members what inspires them in these dark days
Tan Rashid, bus driver Middlesborough “The thing that keeps me going and that I like to believe is that there’s good in everyone. Whatever bad is happening out there don’t change who you are.
“Stay true to yourself and that will shine through. You can rise above hate and become a better person for doing that. You have the power to change other people by believing in yourself and being a good person. That’s what gives me hope.”
Dr Kathryn Lloyd-Williams, clinical psychologist Salford Royal Hospital “There was a real sense of unity, camaraderie and compassion amongst my colleagues (after the Manchester attack). After one night on the unit I went back to my room and one of my colleagues was there.
“She said ‘are you ok’ and I said ‘no not really’ and she just hugged me. To have that kind of contact, that doesn’t usually happen, it’s very special. It certainly brought us together and provided some light in a difficult time.”
Manjit Panesra, barrister Ilford “There’s a better future out there. We know austerity is a political decision and there is an alternative. We can have proper housing, adequate benefits and properly funded hospitals and schools. I’m not alone in feeling this way. The country is slowly but surely waking up to it.”
Janet Williams, NHS associate practitioner Nottingham “I want the Tories out. We’ve had enough of the cuts and the pay freeze. I’m confident that Labour can do that now. Jeremy Corbyn has progressed a long way and gained a lot of support from young people. “They are realising that they can do something, that they can take action and make a better future for themselves. That makes me hopeful.”
Stuart Davis, Bentley worker Crewe “Jeremy gives me hope and the Labour manifesto. I was also inspired by the maiden speeches of the new Labour MPs. There’s a general feeling of change. People are realising they’ve lived under seven years of austerity, when last week the Prime Minister found a billion pounds from nowhere just so she could stay in office.”
