The claim for the year from next April seeks to move the lowest paid staff onto the real living wage of £8.45 an hour (£9.75 in London) and for all workers to receive a 5 per cent pay rise.
Unite national officer for local authorities Fiona Farmer said, “Local government workers in waste, refuse, maintenance, schools and leisure have suffered from years of austerity with significant cuts to services, jobs and pay.
“They provide an invaluable service at the heart of their communities on a daily basis and deserve better than the pay cuts that have left them struggling to make ends meet.”
Recent pay deals in private firms have shown that the country can indeed afford to reward workers fairly.
Unite has secured a 17 per cent rise over three years for workers at Rolls Royce in Rotherham; an “outstanding” two-year deal at the luxury car maker Aston Martin; a two-year deal at Jaguar Land Rover,
6.5 per cent over three years at car firm Bentley; and an 8.7 per cent increase over two years for hundreds of workers at the famous Tunnock’s in Lanarkshire – which obviously takes the biscuit!
As for our hardworking public sector workers it remains to be seen if any sequel to the Whitehall farce is a serious production – or yet another pantomime.
