Park Update
Making waves
SeaWorld Orlando is preparing to open a new wave ride like no other. Park World finds out more.
attraction, designed by Switzerland’s Bolliger and Mabillard (B&M), blends the power of ocean waves with the thrills of an incredible coaster. The experience will begin the moment guests board the unique surfboard-

shaped train. From there, an imaginative and immersive ride begins as they are secured in a surfing position – not standing, not seated, but hang ten-style – ready to jump and dive through the waves. The take-off zone then launches riders as if they have just caught a gnarly wave through a pipeline of smooth track. The coaster’s seats will both rise and fall to mimic the sensation of the ebbs and flows a surfer feels on their board as they zip through a powerful wave. Jonathan Smith, vice president of rides and engineering at SeaWorld
Orlando, says: “Pipeline: The Surf Coaster will deliver a first-of-its-kind attraction that can only be experienced at SeaWorld Orlando. Guests from all over the globe will surf on an iconic and gnarly surfboard which will send them on an adventure of tight turns, twists, five airtime moments and a wave curl inversion.”
An experience like no other As the seventh roller coaster at the park, Pipeline’s ride experience will be unlike any other. Each of the ride’s trains will feature 24 seats designed to move with the flow of the ride. Not to be confused with a stand-up coaster, Pipeline is the result of years of research and partnership between B&M and SeaWorld to create something entirely new. Each ride, and each seat, will be individually unique and different. Throughout the experience, riders will reach heights of 110-feet and will
feel as though they are about to wipe out as their surfboard flips upside down several times along the 2,950 feet of track. Reaching speeds of 60 mph, riders will be stoked during the entire one minute and 50 second wave period. With a projected height requirement of 1.37 m, Pipeline will be SeaWorld’s fourth B&M coaster. Smith adds: “Pipeline will add even more diversity to our roller coaster
portfolio by offering a brand-new thrilling and incredible surfing experience when it opens.” American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) President, Elizabeth Ringas, echoed
Smith’s comments. She added: “ACE members and thrill-seekers alike love new, exclusive coaster experiences. Pipeline will definitely offer coaster fans the chance to imagine they are surfing in the ocean as they whip along the incredible wave of track. We are so excited with this news from SeaWorld Orlando!” Located along the West Shore of the park, Pipeline is a key part of the
park’s updated Festival Pathway, which will also feature a new gift shop. Guests can see the attraction’s ocean blue track and launch station taking shape as they head to the park entrance from the parking lot. Pipeline’s location will also provide easy access to SeaWorld’s meeting and event space, providing new opportunities for the team’s clients and special event guests. Pipeline: The Surf Coaster will open to the public in the spring of 2023.
