lobal Policing is an organisation that supports schools and children with security matters

and policing crime – the brainchild of ex-Chief Inspector Shane Williams, former head of training for Greater Manchester Police. “When I set this up, our aim was to teach

children about law and crime, to help them make better choices. However, as the number of schools we built relations with increased, we now offer much more – from security and lockdown reviews to a large range of teacher-training packages, and we manage data protection for over 200 schools.” Their services have never been so needed.

Lockdown’s been difficult for children. A very strange new world that may have

separated them from their only food source, their friends and the routine of going to their only safe space, school. Imagine what some had to endure over lockdown: isolation, domestic or sexual violence, sibling or parent bullying, starvation, the list goes on. They’ve set up a programme called

FORWARDS, for children in need of greater support following lockdown. This 6-session mentoring takes place in and out of school to help re-engage young people back into learning. They also provide Project Chameleon, a highly

interactive, structured project delivered in schools over 10 2-hour sessions. Each week the children look at a different crime, such as burglary, and

work though a booklet and an interactive package on screen, with discussions led by an ex- police officer. This project creates a non- judgemental, confidential environment within the confines of safeguarding, for the children to discuss their experiences, ask questions and learn more about the law. “I joined the police like many new recruits to

make a difference to people’s lives, however I quickly became aware that the police are mainly a reactive service despite what they like to think. Any idea I had of helping young people understand how their choices and subsequent consequences of that choice make a difference in their lives quickly became diminished,” continues Shane. “After 18 years, I made the decision to step out and work towards being more supportive and proactive in helping children understand the law and how each choice they make can have consequences.” Global Policing excel in setting up bespoke

packages for schools experiencing certain issues such as internet safety or incidents with knives. These packages normally run for a full week and wrap round work being done at school. They include input from pupils, teachers, parents, as well as governor training, policy reviews, competitions and high-visibility engagement by the Global Policing team. “I remember a boy being presented to me after

he’d stolen 20 chocolate bars from a shop on the way to school. The shopkeeper, headteacher, and police officers all shouted at him. The police officers then arrested him to criminalise him. That was until I stepped in and asked some simple questions – 1. Did he know it was wrong? And 2. If he knew then why do it? Stealing 20 chocolate bars is unusual for one boy to eat. By connecting on a human level, I discovered his mother worked two jobs from 5.30am to 8pm. He was kicked out of the house all this time and was never given dinner money. He was stealing chocolate to sell at school so he could buy dinner. Needless to say, I didn’t criminalise him, he apologised to the shopkeeper who gave him a paper job, he apologised to the head, who gave him free school meals, and he apologised to his mum, who got childminding support from social services.
