CPD

Three ways our MAT is helping schools to improve CPD

E

ducation Today hears from Karla Martin, Director of Standards and School Improvement, Chelmsford Learning Partnership.

Research finds that only two-fifths of teachers think that their most recent training was relevant, sufficient and of high quality. While the importance of continuous professional development (CPD) is well-recognised, many teachers also feel that they don’t have time to reflect on their training or embed their learning into their teaching. The Department for Education (DfE) has previously found that comprehensive CPD can support teacher retention, with more progression opportunities and training cited as reasons to stay in the profession. As a trust, we believe that an effective CPD programme is not just the responsibility of our schools to deliver – it is a core focus for our trust.

Taking a trust-wide approach means that we can leverage the different education phases and contexts to develop the capabilities and knowledge of our teaching staff. The benefits are clear: improved wellbeing, motivation and job satisfaction for our teachers and a robust pipeline of talent for our trust.

Without understanding your team’s needs and

aspirations, you can’t effectively plan their career development or the future growth of your trust. All interactions are an opportunity to understand staff goals and ambitions and map these against your trust’s ambitions to identify areas of alignment and gaps that need to be filled. We take a genuine interest in the development of our staff to deepen our understanding of their goals and ambitions.

This knowledge has enabled us to implement clear systems and processes for staff development. Not only does it create a culture of transparency and build trust amongst our staff, it also ensures that everybody has a strong understanding of development opportunities at every level.

Below are three of the ways in which we have enhanced our trusts approach to CPD to ensure that all our teachers have access to high-quality, bespoke pathways that support their personal progression and development.

Drawing on existing resources With 11 primary, secondary and all-through schools within our trust, we have access to a wealth of passionate experts across all education phases, which has been a successful tool for personal development within our trust.
