CONTENTS Dear Reader, Welcome to the latest issue!

We’re getting close to the end of the academic year. Exams will be wrapping up come the end of

June - much to the relief of students and teachers across the UK. And ahead of the summer break, schools and universities will start making their plans for the next year. There’s always a lot to think about - and this month’s issue features plenty of insightful reading to inform, advise, and spark some inspiration.

Our feature focus this month is on School Maintenance and Design. In the context of the government’s recent commitment to creating 10,000 new SEND school places, Paul Knifton, Architect at multi-disciplinary consultancy Pick Everard, looks at how existing mainstream and special schools can design learning spaces where all pupils can thrive. We also put the spotlight on technology skills in schools this month, as Sal McKeown takes a look at the work being done by Apps for Good, a charity which supports students to create their own apps by providing step by step training materials. Beyond developing their skills in tech, Sal discovers that this charity may have cracked the code when it comes to getting kids to think about how they might tackle real world problems.

In our Catering and Nutrition feature, apetito’s Senior Dietician Rachel Sipaul expounds the role of schools in helping children to develop healthy eating habits, and discusses the approaches schools can take to make sure they get it right. Meanwhile, Mike Meek from allmanhall has an environmental take on food in our Sustainability feature as he discusses how schools might move to a more sustainable supply chain while making cost savings. Elsewhere in the issue, you’ll find our usual news, views and expert insights. We always love to hear from you, so if you’d like to contribute, please get in touch via email.

Enjoy!
