IB Middle Years Programme: Creating a generation of connected and culturally aware students


oday’s students are inquiring, risk-taking and internationally-minded learners. The world is more connected than ever; schools must adopt

diversity, languages and cultural values, to encourage intercultural sensitivity, respect and appreciation if they are to truly fulfil the needs of students aged 11 to 16 years. The latest Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development

(OECD) report looks at whether today’s students are ready to thrive in an interconnected world. Findings show that more countries now look beyond their own borders for successful education policies, stating that globalization requires education programmes to push cross cultural collaboration, to create economic and social value. The International

Baccalaureate’s (IB) internationally-minded approach aligns and incorporates these practices within its Middle Years Programme (MYP). A flexible skills-based framework of education, the MYP offers the breadth required to develop well-rounded young people who are active community members and drivers of global change. To help students achieve this, the IB awards the MYP

Innovator grant, which creates opportunities for students to build their skills to become future socially conscious leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs. Through the MYP, students connect the classroom to the real world

as it allows them to investigate global issues, study a second language and develop responsibility for their community and their own development. As today’s students head into an ever-changing future, the IB strives

to equip learners with the skills needed to thrive and make a difference in the world.


Take on the Taste Kitchen Challenge from Get Set to Eat Fresh A

ldi and Team GB are challenging young people aged 5–14 from England,

Scotland and Wales to get creative and design their own original recipe, inspired by Team GB. The winners of each age group will submit their recipes to an all-star judging panel of athlete ambassadors for the chance to win exciting prizes for themselves and £200 Aldi vouchers for their school. The overall winner will be featured in an Aldi leaflet and all winning recipes will be featured and available for download on the Aldi website and the Get Set to Eat Fresh website. The Taste Kitchen Challenge The challenge, which is part of Aldi and Team GB’s award-winning school initiative, Get Set to Eat Fresh, can be entered from home or school. With flexible downloadable resources to help inspire ideas, the challenge encourages children to learn about healthy eating and cooking skills through creating their own healthy recipes. The competition is open to all students aged 5–14 in England, Scotland

and Wales and will be judged across three categories: ages 5–7, ages 7–11 and ages 11–14. The recipes submitted can be any dish – from a no-cook smoothie to a full meal – but must include at least two fruits or vegetables and be inspired by Team GB. This means it could be inspired by their favourite athlete, great British recipes, or the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games – whatever their focus, students are encouraged to be as creative as possible. Students should then submit their recipe, a photo of them with the finished dish and a paragraph explaining how it’s inspired by Team GB to be in with a chance to win. The Resources The Taste Kitchen Challenge resources offer curriculum links to PSHE,

Sustainability and Food Technology by exploring the key elements that should go into every healthy recipe. The simple-to-use resources explore key vocabulary and cooking methods to assist pupils in creating a balanced and healthy recipe. This includes a presentation with brainstorm exercises to explore healthy ingredients and advice on writing a great recipe, alongside the key recipe entry and cover sheets for students to enter the competition. Using sample recipes from the Get Set to Eat Fresh website, students

can compare and contrast healthy recipes to create an original recipe that is inspired by Team GB. Students can also get some further inspiration by watching health chef Ian Haste and Olympic gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold on the Get Set to Eat Fresh website as they create their own recipe. The Prizes The winners of each category will receive £50 in Aldi vouchers, an exclusive Team GB goody bag, a certificate, and their recipe will be featured on the Aldi and Get Set to Eat Fresh websites. The winners’ schools will receive £200 in Aldi vouchers and a bag of fresh produce. One overall winner’s recipe will also win a piece of money-can’t-buy signed Team GB Tokyo 2020 merchandise, and be featured on a full or double-page spread of an Aldi leaflet. The judging panel for the challenge will include Olympic Gold and Silver
