4-12 NEWS Highlights from the UK education sector 13 VIEWS

With author Kate Wiseman, and Patrick Hayes, Director of BESA 14 BESA CORNER

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today. This month, we’re focusing on the often thorny issue of school finances, with an in-depth look at academy financing. In our first piece, we hear from Jamie Russell, expert on academies at Perrys Chartered Accountants, who looks at the regulations governing academies and in particular, how they differ from schools in a number of areas. In the second, Robin Evans, Partner and Head of Academies at Sussex and Gatwick-based chartered accountants, tax, and business advisers, MHA Carpenter Box, discusses the steps to consider when converting to an academy and the possible pitfalls along the way. Also in this month’s issue, and given our

thoughts are now turning to (whisper it!) the festive season, we have two great pieces on music and the performing arts in schools, the first from Andy Hawkings and Tom Veck of rock band for kids ‘Rocktopus’; while our second comes from Richard West, Director of Music at Loughborough Schools Foundation, who argues that schools, and the independent sector in particular, must do more to encourage participation. We continue our regular section shining a spotlight on the many aspects of SEND with Joanne Gladder and Kate Sarginson, have Graham Cooper and Kirsty Bertenshaw as always offering insight and advice, and a great roster of commenters sharing their thoughts on the world of education. What’s more, we continue our section on

education writers, “From the pen of…”, with Kate Wiseman, author of YA series Gangster School, who offers her advice on getting children enthusiastic about reading. Remember, we love to hear from you, you

can get in touch with us via Twitter @EdTodayMag, Facebook and our homepage, as well as by phone or email. Enjoy the issue!
