ROUND UP
nasen appoints National Director for Whole School SEND
n
asen is delighted to announce the appointment of Anne Heavey as the National Director for Whole School SEND.
Anne, who has experience of multi-output contract management, a
background in teaching and joins nasen from her current role as Senior SEND Policy Advisor for the National Education Union, will have direct leadership responsibility for the £3.4m SEND Schools Workforce contract recently awarded by DfE to nasen in a bid to support the workforce in SEND. Anne will be supported in her role by two National SEND Leaders,
Simon Knight and Malcolm Reeve, both of whom have significant experience of school leadership and SEND and have been supporting the work for Whole School SEND since its inception in 2016. The project will build on existing work undertaken by the Whole
School SEND Consortium to train over 500 practitioners in the use of the SEND Review and will see a number of school improvements and specialist organisations come together to build on an existing community of practice of more than 4000 schools, which aims to reach at least 10,000 schools over the next two years through the creation of eight school-led regional hubs across England. The hubs will work to bring together local SEND networks to support school improvement within their region.
We can announce today that 13 of the 16 regional SEND leadership
appointments (2 per hub) have been made. Talking more about the appointments made, Dr Adam Boddison,
nasen’s Chief Executive said, “There was a rigorous selection process for both the national and regional posts and we now have a strong team in place to deliver the ambitions of the SEND Schools Workforce contract. Each of the eight Regional School Commissioner areas will have a SEND Leader and Deputy SEND Leader who will be working in partnership to join the dots of existing provision. I am particularly delighted to welcome Anne Heavey as the National Director as she has long been a force for good in ensuring there is quality SEND provision across our school system”.
Nuts about KPs? Over £10k-worth of prizes in KP of the Year 2018 awards! Celebration of kitchen porters’ ‘massive’ contribution now in 5th year
T
he search is on for the KP of the Year 2018. The competition, which is the brainchild of
warewashing specialist Winterhalter, is now in its fifth year and looking to build on its increasing popularity. With that in mind, the prize fund now tops £10,000 – and every single KP who is nominated gets a special gift. “Every year the standard of entry goes up and
the pressure intensifies,” says Winterhalter managing director Stephen Kinkead. “And every year we hear stories of KPs doing extraordinary work that goes way beyond the call of duty. “What’s great about this competition is that so
many people in the industry support it. That’s partly because so many of us started out as KPs – including me!” Amongst the high profile chefs who have
voiced their support for the KP of the Year competition is Paul Ainsworth. "I started out as a KP,” he says. “It’s such a hard job! We can’t function without them. To be able to celebrate kitchen porters is great – the KP of the Year is a brilliant idea.” The winner receives a trophy, £1,000 cash, and
a celebratory dinner for family and friends. They also win a brand new Winterhalter for their work

place, worth up to £8,000. Two runners up receive cash prizes and every entrant gets a special KP of the Year apron, in a presentation tin, created by Oliver Hardy. Last year’s winner was José Núnez, of The
Stafford hotel, St James, London. He was nominated by Mark Surguy, The Stafford’s hotel manager, who said, “José has a work ethic that cannot be compared. He’s always smiling, he holds himself and every member of his team to the highest standards. Nothing is ever too much for him.” Stephen Kinkead added, “José was a truly
worthy winner and he was the unanimous choice of the judges. Now it’s time to find his successor!”
