Everything online gaming operators need to know

“There is reason to be optimistic when it comes to 3DS 2.0.” So says Peter Cornforth – Paysafe’s Head of Product, UK Acquiring.

DS 2.0 is a new, sophisticated standard for online card payment authentication. Introduced by the major credit card schemes, it is already being rolled out across Europe; anyone with an online checkout and accepting card payments must integrate it by September to meet their obligations under the Payment Services Regulation. One of the biggest changes with 3DS 2.0 is the new, more stringent requirements for strong customer authentication (SCA). This has led to concerns from multiple quarters that there will be an increase in friction when a payment is due to be made, and therefore the rate of abandoned transactions will increase.

This would no doubt be of significant concern in online gaming, an industry where deposits and withdrawals are a vital component in a platform’s user experience, itself a critical differentiator between operators.

However, there is reason to be optimistic when it comes to 3DS 2.0. Not only will it improve authentication techniques – and so reduce fraud which is always beneficial in gaming – but it has also been designed in a way which will promote a friction free customer experience for as great a percentage of transactions as possible, alleviating many of those worries about player experience.

MCOMMERCE IS NOW THE PRIORITY 3DS 2.0 has been designed to fit more easily into an

online business’ day-to-day operations. Crucially, it has been built specifically with mCommerce in mind, which will be a game changer for gambling operators as gaming apps continue to grow their market share. For a start, data sharing between the operator and the player’s issuer (when making a deposit using a bank card) under the new rules has been improved, enhancing security without adding unnecessary layers of authentication to the payment process. This helps to minimise payment friction for players, reducing the risk of deposit abandonment, all while protecting operators and players from the repercussions of payment fraud.

In addition, the new requirements introduce a new multi-factor payment authentication system. This means that while passwords – a factor called “what you know” – are still acceptable, issuers can also implement other factors, such as “what you have” (a smartphone for example that can receive verification codes via SMS) and “who you are” (fingerprints and other biometrics).

Implementing these last two factors can allow the removal of passwords entirely, enhancing security while streamlining the payment process for players. This is a great benefit to operators as they push ahead with their mobile-first strategies – everyone has experienced the difficulty of trying to type in passwords on a mobile keypad. With biometrics replacing passwords, all consumers will need to do is scan their fingerprint on their own smart device to make a payment.

Online gaming and sports betting is already trending towards being a mobile first industry, but the increased consumer experience of depositing on mobile due to biometric verification may actually assist this shift.
