Samsung: “pure synergy” by Jonathan Hartley, Channel Manager - Built in Appliances at Samsung UK

e want to make sure that people understand our products and the benefits they bring through SmartThings, AI and energy saving features. The SmartThings app is downloadable on all smartphones, so it’s open to everybody. The reason we like it is that it’s an open platform, so it automatically finds all Samsung products in your home; if you have a TV already, it will connect to it, if you have a soundbar, it will connect to it, etc. But obviously the kbb show is all about home appliances, so when we start looking at our cooking and our laundry and our refrigeration, you can also seamlessly bring those into SmartThings. As it’s an open platform, you can bring in other products from other manufacturers, so instead of having a separate app to use for all these different functions, utilise SmartThings and bring that smart connected home together.
Energy Saving
There’s still a cost-of-living crisis out there; the cost of food and energy is always increasing. With products like the Dual Cook and the Dual Cook Flex people can save up to 25% more energy when using the top oven. That is something that’s been really well-received by our customers since it
launched two years ago and is still very apparent now. If you’re cooking just one pot or something on a tray – you don’t need the whole cavity, so our ovens will only use the top cavity, saving 25% in energy, while the full 76 litre cavity can still be used for larger meals. Plus, it’s all controllable through SmartThings.
AI
AI is a big word that everybody’s using at the moment and people are either loving it, intimidated by it or don’t fully understand it. We want to demonstrate and explain AI through our appliances. For example, our refrigerators now can learn how often and when you open the door for longer to load it you’re your weekly grocery shop. To increase energy efficiency, it will use that intelligence to activate fast-chill for the next grocery load. If it learns the times it needs to cool, it becomes more efficient, uses less electricity, and also regulates that temperature.
Our laundry category utilises has AI Sense technology. You might have11kg capacity but not always need to use it. If you need to just wash two kilos, the new Samsung washing machine range has the ability to sense how dirty the water is, and therefore sense how much detergent is needed,
and even change what might be a two-hour cycle down to a half-hour cycle. All these benefits from just the press of one button are allowing the appliance to add value to the customer because it’s going to save time and save money. The washing machines also have AutoDose function. Most people put a full laundry detergent cap or tablet in the washing machine, however, it might not be needed for every wash. AutoDose ensures it only takes the amount of detergent that it needs for that wash. Linking back to SmartThings: the AutoDose will tell me when I’m running low on detergent, and it’ll tell me how much it cost me when I ran a certain cycle. Thanks to this, I can start to look at benefits of cost saving, on both energy and supplies. You can see why you have to talk about all of those elements at once because they all feed each other. It’s pure synergy.
