INDUSTRY UPDATE THE BMA COLUMN
BMA – A strong stance on Reg 4 compliance
C
ompliance is an essential part of supplying water fittings in the UK, and for connection to the water supply.
At the Bathroom Manufacturers Association, it has been at the heart of
our strategy since 2019. Promoting the Water Supply (Water Fittings Regulations 1999) with
particular focus on the requirement of Regulation 4 is an important role for the association as, unfortunately, there has been confusion in the marketplace around certification of products for many years. Members of the
association spend considerable percentages of their budget ensuring they meet the high standards required in the UK to protect the water supply from contamination by materials, or water being pulled into the system by backflow or back-siphonage through negative pressure in the water system. The regulations require
products to be of an appropriate standard and be suitable for the circumstances they are used for, this is commonly referred to as ‘Reg 4 complaint’. BMA is working to educate everyone in the supply chain, from
manufacturers, specifiers and developers, to water undertakers, installers and consumers. Regulation 4 certification and correct installation of bathroom products will ensure the water supply and the public are kept safe. Specific demands for approvals from one test house are not necessary. That is why, I’m particularly thrilled to see similar actions being taken by
The British Pump Manufacturers Association recently. They too are emphasising the particular focus on the requirement of Regulation 4 and highlighting the three relevant approval/certification schemes in the UK for Reg 4 compliance in relation to water fittings and components - NSFreg4, WRAS and KUKreg4. All three schemes provide the legally required testing and certification demanded by Reg 4, and therefore offer the exact same levels of product approval, and with it the much-valued level playing field. Highlighting this issue will help our respective sectors to use a variety of
routes to compliance and means new high efficiency products can be launched to the market far quicker, allowing the all-important energy and water savings to be realised that much sooner by both the end-user and the environment.
