INDUSTRY UPDATE THE BMA COLUMN

BMA – Building resilient global value chains: The Big Debate

T

he COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical importance of resilient global supply chains, particularly for manufacturing sectors in the UK. The bathroom manufacturing industry is no exception, as disruptions in the supply chain significantly impacted both businesses and consumers.

Recognising the significance of this issue, the BMA’s Big Debate panel session on the 10th of October 2023 at our Annual Industry Conference will explore strategies for building resilience, the role of sustainability, analyse the impact on consumers and identify areas for improvement. Global supply chains play a vital role in the success of the UK manufacturing sector. Indeed, the Department for International Trade published a resilience framework in November last year for public and private sector organisations considering potential actions to mitigate risks and vulnerabilities.

In the Big Debate, panellists and experts, including representatives from the Government, will discuss embedding greater resilience and understanding and managing supply chain dependencies. Our sector will draw valuable lessons to develop strategies that address vulnerabilities and build more robust systems.

By collaborating with suppliers, manufacturers, retailers, and other stakeholders, the bathroom sector can collectively strengthen supply chains and ensure a coordinated response to future disruptions. Sustainability will be another crucial aspect discussed during The Big Debate. The UK Government’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 underscores the importance of sustainable practices in manufacturing. The bathroom sector can contribute to a greener and more resilient supply chain by adopting sustainable sourcing, production methods, and packaging.

By diversification, collaboration, and adopting sustainable practices, the bathroom manufacturing industry can strengthen its global value chains. These improvements will ensure continuity during disruptions and contribute to our sector’s overall competitiveness and sustainability, ensuring that products remain available and affordable. If you’d like to attend the Big Debate, visit Industry Conference 2023 on the BMA website.
