INDUSTRY VIEWS Bathroom Trends 2022
After the unprecedented years of 2020 and 2021 and as we move into 2022, there are many central trends and consumer changes affecting the bathroom industry. Wellness continues to be a central trend, with many consumers prioritising their health and wellbeing
in light of the pandemic. With over 50% of employed adults working from home, it is logical that many feel the need to upgrade and improve their homes, especially bathrooms and bedrooms, as they become the ‘havens’ away from their desk. There has been a dramatic increase year on year in the number of multigenerational households, with
one in three now co-inhabiting with either their elderly parents or grown-up children. This has only been exacerbated by the pandemic as many elderly relatives were forced to move in with families and grown up children returned home. This means that whilst style is important, functionality needs to be a key consideration for consumers
in order to ensure their bathrooms are functional for all their family’s needs. Sustainability constantly remains at the forefront of design and manufacturing, with British
manufacturers looking to source ethically and locally. As we move into 2022, will we see an increase in the number of sustainable homes available, with reports suggesting plans are set for an additional 1.5 million new UK homes to be built with low-carbon, energy and water efficiency by 2023. Finally, and still following on from the circumstances of 2020 and 2021, the number of those over
50 who are experiencing loneliness has become extremely prevalent and is set to reach two million by 2025. Bathrooms need to offer a space to relax and unwind and help with the day-to-day stresses felt by many.

Many shower toilets can be connected to an app, allowing users to save their own personal settings and apply them to smart toilets outside the home. The intuitive nature of smart products like this make the bathroom experience a relaxing one. Smart technology is set to revolutionise the way we see the bathroom - from a forgotten space in the household to one that creates nothing but a peaceful and calming atmosphere.
A sense of calm after the storm in bathroom colours
After what have been a turbulent couple of years, the bathroom of 2022 is more than ever a space to escape, to relax and to unwind. Colour is being introduced increasingly as a way of creating a sense of calmness amongst the chaos. We are seeing a significant move towards a soft neutral colour palette in bathroom design, for tiles, accessories and for sanitaryware. While bold blocks of colour are eye- catching and grab attention on Pinterest and in showroom window displays, neutral shades have a much broader appeal. This sense of calmness
and softness is also being seen in finishes, from matt sanitaryware that has a tactile appeal, to brushed metal finishes that are easy on the eye and easy to live with. For 2022, we expect to see much more of this paired back look, with simple, minimalist styling providing the ideal back drop to a relaxing, calm bathroom environment.
