white house goes deep

White House stands out against its Victorian neighbours on a residential Street in a leafy Bristol neighbourhood. The flat roofed, white rendered house is striking with its sculpted windows. The main, original volume is softened by a series of additions that are distinctly clad with native larch slats. Located in the suburb of St Andrews, on a rare double-width
plot, White House was a tired 1930s house with a mishmash of extensions. The brief was to retain and upgrade the existing structure while dramatically improving its environmental performance, comfort and relationship to the landscape. Through a carefully considered retrofit, remodel and extensions, the house has been opened up to create light-filled spaces, dramatic interior volumes and a striking bespoke staircase that connects the floors. Sam Goss, Director at Barefoot Architects led the retrofit.
“When the opportunity arose to buy the “ugly duckling” of the street, James and Ellie recognised the potential of the unusual wide plot and large south-facing garden.” The original house consisted of a series of small rooms with low ceilings and dark spaces; the large back garden had good potential but felt separate to the house. By introducing a double-height space at the heart of the house and connecting the levels with an open staircase and gallery walkway, the house feels so much more spacious. For homeowners James and Ellie, the project took full advantage of the generous outdoor spaces, creating a strong connection between indoor and outdoor.
