...to the June issue of ABC&D magazine...

We kick-off the issue with an exploration of Kirsty Maguire’s Passivhaus self-build in Fife on page 04. Known aff ectionately as The Silver House due to its use of metallic cladding, the building sits within a sloped landscape, aff ording spectacular views of the adjacent Tay estuary. Built to exacting Passivhaus standards, the project comprises the architect’s private home and separate offi ce space and forms part of an ongoing study with Strathclyde University which monitors energy use, indoor air quality and temperature. Moving from Scotland to Wales, our second project feature on page 08 takes a look BDP’s plans for a new public transport interchange in Haverfordwest. Designed to enhance connectivity and accessibility, the project will use striking aluminium fi ns which will wrap around the building to create a modern and dynamic identity. This month’s Hot Topic (page 14)

reveals how excessive noise is creating a barrier to the ‘Great Return’ to the offi ce; Jamie Sandilands discusses the simplicity and style of bathroom wall panels on page 19; Robin Gray explains how adaptive reuse in hotel design can breathe new life into historic city centres on page 28; and on page 34, Geraint Edwards makes the case for hybrid fi re and CO systems. Steve Pickering discusses the benefi ts

of roofl ight retrofi ts in educational settings on page 44; SHH Architecture explores the challenge of making historic buildings more energy effi cient on page 52; and on page 54, Signature Walls explains the luxury Venetian plaster specifi cation process. ...from all at ABC&D...
