how the imaginative repurposing of existing buildings can create places with real character that enhance their historic environment, providing a unique experience for hotel guests. Maximising space and access Similarly, there is strong demand for a wide range of sports facilities in cities like Bristol but limited space to provide them. The Chellaram Sports Complex at Clifton College provides a good example of how to maximise space and public access to amenities in a sustainable way. This state-of-the-art building delivers Sport England Premier level

play facilities and features a sprung multi-purpose floor which can accommodate a wide range of sports including netball, tennis, basketball and badminton. Our brief was to design a sustainable sports complex to

replace the school’s inflatable “bubble” sports dome which could accommodate only a limited number of sports. The new building, which has achieved a BREEAM Excellent sustainable building rating, incorporates air source heat pumps that absorb heat from the environment and thermal battery technology to store energy for later reuse. In addition, the sports complex features a wildflower biodiverse

roof and the site includes native woodland planting and a wildflower meadow with the aim to deliver an 80% biodiversity net gain. As well as being an exciting new amenity for Clifton College, the Chellaram Sports Complex is also used by local schools

and groups, providing a wonderful facility for the wider community. This flagship development has transformed the range of sport that can be delivered within one carefully designed space. Whether it’s cutting-edge sports facilities or high-end hotels,

development in our city centres requires imaginative design solutions that maximise existing buildings and spaces, and balance modern amenities with the preservation of the existing urban fabric.
