Solar’s real value to a balance sheet is not just the electricity it generates, it is the volatility it removes. Wholesale energy prices have swung dramatically over the past several years, and every kilowatt-hour a business generates on its own roof is a kilowatt-hour it no longer has to buy at a price it does not control. For businesses with tight margins or energy-intensive operations, that is beyond a sustainability initiative, it is a hedge. There is also a structural dimension

too often missed early. Not every roof is a simple candidate: heritage buildings, ageing industrial units and sites with

complex roof geometries can deter installers unwilling to quote for the extra engineering work. But with the right structural assessment, even architecturally sensitive buildings, including listed structures, have successfully hosted lightweight solar arrays that generate a fifth or more of their annual electricity needs without compromising the fabric of the building. The lesson: a roof should not be written off as unsuitable until it has actually been assessed, and the range of buildings now proving solar-viable is wider than most property teams assume.

For property owners and finance

directors weighing up energy strategy for the next few years, the practical takeaway is straightforward. Get the data before you decide. A remote or structural survey costs little and takes little time, but it turns solar from a guess into a modelled, de-risked investment decision, one with a visible payback period, a quantifiable carbon saving, and a genuine hedge against a market that shows no sign of settling down. The rooftop was always there.

Increasingly, so is the case for using it.
