MICHAEL WHITEHEAD, DIRECTOR OF BG INSTALL, EXPLAINS WHY THE COMPANY’S RECENT HAUL OF MACHINERY HAS BEEN A GOOD INVESTMENT.
How long have you been in the industry? What attracted you to it? I’ve been in the industry for around 15 years. Creativity has always been a big part of who I am, having initially studied a creative course at college. By chance, I took a job working with a graphics supplier on race boats and quickly developed a passion for graphics, branding and seeing ideas brought to life. What started as an opportunity soon became a career and I’ve never looked back.
What is the key to your business’ success? For us, it’s all about delivering on our promises. We set high standards for every project and make sure we do exactly what we say we’re going to do. Inevitably, challenges can arise, but the important thing is how you respond. We take responsibility, find solutions and make sure our customers are happy with the end result. This approach has helped us build a strong reputation and a good base of repeat customers.
What is your proudest achievement? My proudest achievement is the business we’ve built and the reputation we’ve earned for taking on complex, unusual projects and delivering them to an exceptionally high standard. Our work now spans marine, aviation, hospitality, education and commercial fleets, covering everything from racing boats and sailing yachts to superyachts, aircraft, drones and jet skis. There’s a real sense of satisfaction in taking a project from an initial idea through to the finished installation.
What is having the greatest impact on your business at the moment? For us, investing in new machinery isn’t just about being able to produce more. It’s about improving the quality and consistency of what we produce and being able to respond more quickly when customers have tight deadlines. By reinvesting in the business, we can keep developing our capabilities while maintaining the high standards our customers expect from us.
Where do you see the greatest wide-format opportunities? We see the greatest opportunities in specialist applications where customers are looking for an alternative to traditional refurbishment or replacement. Architectural films, interior transformations, fleet

branding and marine applications are all growing areas. Businesses are increasingly looking for solutions that minimise downtime, reduce costs and deliver a high-quality finish and that’s exactly where modern wide-format print and vinyl technologies can work really well.
What would/is making your day-to-day operations easier?
Without question, our latest machinery has transformed the way we work. To put it into perspective, we printed over 600m of material over three days last week. The new equipment can produce around 50m in just 90 minutes, whereas our previous printer would have taken almost 24 hours to achieve the same output. It means we can take on more work, turn jobs around much faster and still maintain the quality our customers expect.
What is your favourite bit of kit?
Our JWEI J-CUT Pro flatbed cutter is incredibly versatile and plays an important role in many of our projects. However, if I had to choose one piece of equipment, it would be our Canon Colorado printer. It’s become the heart of our production process and has completely changed what we’re capable of delivering.
You recently purchased several new pieces of kit, including a Canon Colorado M5W. Why these products and how has it helped your company? We invested in the latest equipment because we wanted to stay at the forefront of the industry and continue providing the best possible service to our customers. The combination of the Canon Colorado M5W, JWEI J-CUT Pro and our new finishing equipment has made a big difference to the way we work. We’re able to keep all of the production process in-house, which gives us greater control over quality and lead times.
What are your impressions of the Canon Colorado M5W? The Colorado M5W has exceeded our expectations. The speed, reliability and print quality have had a huge impact on our day-to-day operations. It has allowed us to increase productivity significantly while maintaining the high standards our customers expect.
Where do you see the business going in five years? Over the next five years, we want to grow BG Install without losing the quality, service and attention to detail on which we’ve built our reputation. Ultimately, we want BG Install to be the first company people call when a project is complex, unusual or difficult to deliver.
