Keeping the college campus warm HEATING PLANT


A new heating system has been installed by SEDDON Engineering Services at a Staffordshire college, focusing on upgrading two plant rooms to improve energy efficiency. The project took place at Lichfield College, part of South Staffordshire College, and accommodates more than 7,000 students. The work was carried out


during winter and required careful management, as one of the plant rooms is situated next to the college’s main entrance, an area with high foot traffic. To keep the college warm and


operational throughout the installation, Seddon provided a temporary boiler while the existing system was being replaced. The team planned the work around staff and student schedules, using break


times to undertake activities that could have caused disruption. This approach enabled the college to remain fully functional during the project. The installation was completed on


31 March, within the planned budget of £160,000. The refurbished plant rooms now contain modern equipment designed to increase energy efficiency and reduce ongoing running costs. Chris Ashforth, director of estates at


South Staffordshire College, says: “The work to upgrade two plant rooms at the college has been truly transformational. Thanks to Seddon’s hard work, we now have two plant rooms with up-to- date, modern equipment which will see us benefit from efficiencies and

development from Berkeley Group is being delivered by Berkeley Capital and is set to provide over 1,700 dwellings across the 12-acre site, which previously housed a gas works. The development master plan looks to convert the disused brownfield site into a thriving community,


with new public spaces including a large communal park and square, along with a range of one, two and three-bedroom homes. To meet the


requirements of the London Plan, the project team looked to achieve a minimum additional 35% reduction in CO₂ emissions over the standard requirements within Part L of the Building Regulations. A key part of their strategy was the construction of a site-wide heat network, which will eventually be


supplied by a combined heat and power plant which is due to be installed but is not yet in place or operational. The heat network has


been extended through the use of thermal substations in the basements of the different development blocks. Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation and Insulated Pipe Support Inserts were specified for the LTHW and DHW

BATTERY STORAGE


Charging infrastructure at airport forecourt


A new Battery Energy Storage System has been connected to the electricity network by GRIDSERVE and UK Power Networks, supporting electric vehicle charging at the London Gatwick Electric Forecourt. The installation includes two 3.6 megawatt batteries linked to UK Power Networks’ distribution infrastructure. These batteries store electricity and release it during peak periods, helping to meet demand from the site’s 30 EV charging bays. The system is capable of powering the entire site for up to three hours at full capacity. As part of the project, the network


design and delivery team at UK Power Networks implemented a voltage management scheme at the grid substation and connected a 33,000-volt network to Gridserve’s infrastructure. Transformers were also installed to provide auxiliary power to the forecourt. The London Gatwick site, located at


the airport’s South Terminal, opened in 2023 and serves passengers, staff, local

residents and taxi operators. In addition to the battery storage system, the forecourt building has a 33.3kW solar panel system on the roof with 114 panels to supplement the power needs of the shops and facilities at the site. This is the fourth Electric Forecourt installation completed by Gridserve within

Airport check-in hall gets an upgrade LIGHTING PROJECT


As part of its five-year £120m investment programme for its 60th anniversary, East Midlands Airport upgraded the lighting in its check- in hall using LUCECO’S Callisto luminaires. The installation was completed by electrical contractor Fredk Lamb and focused on improving energy efficiency while allowing for adaptable lighting control across the space. Due to the structure of the hall roof


being a canopy style, Luceco and Fredk Lamb decided to use Callisto lighting with integrated Platform wireless controls and PIRs, allowing the fittings to be grouped into different sections for the controls, like the commissioned corridor function that enables the


lights near the entrance doors to dim to a lower level than the rest of the hall. This also meant the original cabling


could be used for a point-to-point replacement while still offering full dimming and control functions. Callisto is a linear LED surface


mounted luminaire, designed for open areas due to its wide area lens distribution. Its IK10 rating makes it robust, while its efficacy of 135 Llm/ cW and 100,000 hours lifespan ensure it is efficient and effective. Suitable for trunking, surface or suspension mounting, Callisto can also come with Self-Test and DALI Addressable Emergency packs that provide 3 hours
