very exciting! As an illustrator, I have always had a passion for printmaking as a medium and the history of how it came to be. Some of my favourite work I was able to do for The Outer Worlds were in-game posters and “vintage” ads evoking late being a place for printmaking appreciation in games.
HOW DID YOU INITIALLY COME TO BE INVOLVED IN MAKING PENTIMENT? Josh approached me directly (while we were both winding down other projects at Obsidian) with his pitch of Pentiment to test for interest, and I was extremely excited about the potential of this project getting made whether or not I was involved. Once it reached the point where the timing was right and it seemed like it would actually be greenlit, I was on board 100%.
WHO WERE THE ARTISTS ON THE PROJECT AND WHAT DID THEY BRING TO THE TABLE? Cathy Nichols is our animation lead, and I cannot express enough how impressed I am by what they were able to accomplish. We had so many challenging hurdles and limitations, and our animation team did a fantastic job bringing the 2D art of the game to life, all while adjusting to new tools and pipelines, and an extremely large cast of compelling characters.
Our other concept artist is Soojin Paek. She joined us initially as a summer intern and we were so impressed with her work that we had her join us for the rest of the project. There was so much heart and personality added to the game by her work, including but not limited to the Danse Macabre mural in the chapter house of Kiersau, and all of the delicious meal art in the game.
