INDUSTRY NEWS WCF announces new methodology for cocoa supply chains
The World Cocoa Foundation (WCF), together with the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, has published a new Active Deforestation Risk Assessment (DRA) Methodology for cocoa supply chains. Developed with cocoa companies,
producing-country stakeholders, technical experts, compliance providers and public authorities, the framework aims to bring greater consistency and transparency to deforestation
risk assessment as
traceability, forest protection and due diligence requirements increase. The methodology provides step-by-
step guidance covering plot data quality, forest baseline definition, deforestation analysis, legal zoning checks, verification, and mitigation and corrective actions. It also supports land-use change emissions monitoring through improved mapping and data quality. Mike Matarasso, Impact Director and
Head of North America at WCF, said: “The cocoa sector needs robust, transparent and practical approaches to assessing deforestation
risk. This methodology represents an important step forward in
supporting greater consistency, stronger verification and better-informed decision- making across cocoa supply chains.” Louis Reymondin, Senior Scientist at the Alliance, added: “No single dataset can fully capture the complexity of tropical agricultural landscapes. This
Oterra launches liquid natural blue colours
Oterra has launched liquid versions of its Jungle Blue and Arctic Blue natural colours, expanding format options for food and beverage manufacturers seeking naturally derived blues, greens and purples. Previously available as powders, the liquid colours disperse immediately without pre-mixing and are pumpable, reducing handling and dust during processing. “Liquids have many properties that make them a powerful addition to applications in food and beverage,” said Phil Cook, Head of Strategic Marketing. Jungle Blue is extracted from sustainably sourced
Colombian Jagua fruit, while Arctic Blue uses spirulina cultivated in
Iceland in a carbon-neutral indoor facility
powered by geothermal energy. Oterra said demand for natural blue colours is increasing, with
more than 10,000 food and beverage products containing blue launched in 2025, compared with around 6,000 in 2021. “Having multiple blues in different formats is important for
manufacturers,” Cook added, citing changing regulatory and consumer expectations around naturally derived colours. The launches add flexibility to Oterra’s natural colour portfolio.

framework is intended to
complement national systems and company due diligence processes.
