COX & CO Develops flow wrap chocolate paper packaging
In an industry first, single origin chocolate brand, Cox & Co, has created the first ever paper flow wrap chocolate packaging, allowing it to phase out all plastics and give consumers a curbside recyclable wrapping. For 18 months, Cox & Co has been working towards producing a paper flow wrap to replace its compostable plastic packaging. Working closely with a paper manufacturer in Sweden to find the right type of material and reconfiguring its flow wrap machine to accept it, this week saw the first ever 100% paper flow wrapped chocolate bar roll off the production line. Offering a 12-month
minimum shelf life, Cox & Co’s innovative new paper flow wrap solution is a huge step in the right direction to reducing the huge amount of chocolate packaging waste that currently ends up in landfill. “Consumers are now actively seeking brands that take sustainability seriously and products that are easy to recycle,” explained Gavin Cox, founder of Cox & Co. “Chocolate is a popular household purchase and yet so little of the packaging can be easily recycled at curbside. We are set to change all that with our revolutionary new packaging, which offers a neat and tidy result without the use of plastic.”
Côte D’ivoire raises farmgate cocoa prices 50%
In response to global cocoa market challenges, Ivory Coast raised cocoa prices from CFA Fr1,000 to CFA Fr1,500 per kilo. Minister Adjoumani expressed optimism, foreseeing positive developments. Five export companies anonymously confirmed the decision, which initially had a narrower price range but shifted higher later. Analyst Gerard Stapleton predicts the increase could encourage higher production. The rise in cocoa prices is fueled by diseases affecting Ivorian
plantations, previously limited to Ghana. Increased rainfall in July 2023 worsened the situation. Stapleton suggests the price adjustment may help balance global supply and demand, though immediate improvements for Ivorian farmers may be limited due to crop diseases.
As Ivory Coast tackles the cocoa crisis, stakeholders monitor its impact on local producers and the global market, underscoring the significance of this strategic move in navigating current challenges.
