Fraunhofer IPMS and GlobalFoundries develop new super-efficient FRAM technology
Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (IPMS) and GlobalFoundries have developed a novel ferroelectric random-access memory (FRAM) storage technology that delivers better energy efficiency, faster processing and permanent data storage. Te team has succeeded in integrating
hafnium oxide-based ultra-fast FRAM memory into an existing industrial manufacturing process, for devices to deliver permanent information storage, even without power and without any data loss. “In ferroelectric memory technology, ions
are shiſted very rapidly within a crystal lattice, resulting in a change in polarization. We can use exactly this effect to store information,” explained Konrad Seidel, Head of the Emerging Memory Solutions business unit at Fraunhofer IPMS.

node was used to embed the FRAM cells. Tis platform is specifically designed for manufacturing ultra-low-power microchips. Te novel memory cells operate at under a volt, switch within nanoseconds, and exhibit a long life, reliably enduring a high number of write and erase cycles.
Te new memory technology is aimed at
applications that depend on energy efficiency, like autonomous sensors, battery-powered systems or on-device artificial intelligence. “Affordable ultra-low-power technology,
combined with an ideally matched memory solution, is especially attractive for applications like edge AI. Tis represents the combination of two technologies that complement each other perfectly,” said Sven Beyer from GlobalFoundries. Digital systems are placing ever-increasing
demands on memory. Requirements include fast, durable, non-volatile and extremely energy efficient memory technologies. Current memory solutions are reaching their limits, especially in applications in the automotive sector, industrial automation and medical technology, which has motivated the two companies to partner on this project.
UK fast responders stand to gain from standards- based mission-critical communications

UK Home Office’s Emergency Services Mobile Communication Programme joins the GCF
ESN aims to secure fast, safe and secure voice, video and data across the 4G network, giving first responders immediate access to crucial data, images and information in live situations and emergencies. Te programme will also deliver a common platform to enable emergency services to work more closely together for data sharing in emergencies.
