COMMENT
Should I stay, or should I go? W
elcome to the June issue of Factory & Handling Solutions. A lot has happened (as it tends to now) since I wrote my last comment. Lockdown has eased and many people have returned to work, shops reopened on Monday 15th in an attempt to boost our struggling economy and we’re expecting pubs, restaurants and salons to be allowed to open from the 4th of July. When the shops reopened, footfall was 38.8 per cent higher than the previous week, as pent-up demand led to reports of long queues. The good weather also helped this, meaning the long queues for stores were easily waited out in the sunshine. But as someone who has personally not jumped in the car and headed straight for my nearest Primark, and doesn’t plan to for the forseeable future, will this be my new normal? The surge in online shopping has put a strain on our supply chains and warehouses, but as ever it is the factories and logistics that have been the unsung hero of this crisis. Perhaps this is the next nail in the coffin for the already suffering high-street.
As some of us head back to work, things will undoubtedly be different. For most, their job role will be different too. We have to consider things we would never have thought of before, and it is likely some measures will be in place indefinitely. Most of the shows for this year have been cancelled, and comapnies are trying to find new ways to promote their products, with some turning to online exhibitions or webinars. In this issue you’ll find a few articles looking at the impact of the Coronavirus on our industry, and how it will change the landscape ahead. There is also helpful articles on what you need to consider if you are restarting after some factory downtime.
As always I hope receiving the issue gives you a breath of normality in the strange times we’re experiencing. If you have a comment, opinon or story that you’d like to share, please contact me on

Stay safe & take care, see you for the July/ August issue.
