How to Efficiently Mix Artificial Sweeteners Using High Shear Mixers

For manufacturers and sugar-based formulations using ‘table’ sugar or sucrose can also be benefit from the use of a high shear mixer. Silverson high shear mixers are ideal for the rapid solubilisation of sugar and can create a 66 Brix sugar solution at ambient temperature. Further cost savings can be obtained through the acceleration of the dissolving process provided by the intense high speed, high shear mixing of a Silverson machine, completing solubilisation in a fraction of the time taken by conventional agitators and mixers.


Artificial Sweeteners are used to create a lighter version of a wide range of products. Although these sweeteners are often more expensive than ‘table sugar’, they offer advan- tages to manufacturers as they can be many times sweeter than sucrose or ’table sugar’ and a small percentage can replace a high sugar content.


But, artificial sweeteners, such as Saccharin, Sucralose, Aspartame, Acesulfame K, or Stevia to name a few, cannot replicate the viscosity and texture (properties known as “mouth- feel”) of sucrose sugar-based formulations. As such manufacturers often need to add addi- tional ingredients such as bulking agents, like sorbitol or maltitol, and thickening agents, such as CMC, to compensate for this.


Bulking and thickening agents pose their own processing challenges. They can often be difficult to hydrate due to their low density, which causes them to raft or float on the liquid surface. Once wetted out, they can be difficult to dissolve leading to long processing times, poor dispersion and inconsistent results where conventional mixers are being used. Often times incorporating these ingredients is done at high temperature to aid incorporation. But wastage of raw material can still occur where agglomerates need to be filtered out of a mix- ture, further adding to processing times and costs.


This can be achieved with in-tank Batch Mixers or by adding a Silverson In-Line Mixer to the existing process. The mixers operate as follows: The high speed rotation of the rotor blades creates a powerful suction which draws the water and sugar granules from the vessel into the workhead. Centrifugal force drives the materials to the periphery of the workhead where they are subjected to a milling action in the gap between the rotor and the stator wall. The product is forced out through the stator as fresh materials enter the workhead. In a short mixing cycle all the material passes through the workhead, progressively reducing particle size and exposing an increasing surface area of sugar to the surrounding liquid, accelerating the dissolving process.


Using a Silverson mixer in the process increases versatility, allowing the manufacturer to use sugar in granulated or syrup form.

Using an in-tank High Shear Batch mixer, the video demonstrates the incorporation of artificial sweeteners as well as the dispersion of thickening agents, all at ambient temperature. This eliminates the time and expense of heating and then cooling the mixture.


Small volumes can be mixed in-tank with a Batch mixer as demonstrated in the video. While for larger volumes the Silverson Flashmix is specially designed for bulk powder dispersion.
