Wieland’s new HMI ECO touch panels - essential for machines and systems

W IMechE launches

engineering manual for dealing with COVID-19

T

he Institution of Mechanical Engineers is launching a “manual” of best mechanical engineering practice and

approaches for dealing with COVID-19, focusing on how to ensure people stay safe during the pandemic. The manual is the work of the Institution’s COVID-19 task force

which started work earlier this year when the crisis first struck. Members of the Institution have been involved in efforts

worldwide to defeat the virus, from helping to set up hospitals in the UK and Hong Kong to building ventilators in India. They have also contributed to the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) which gives scientific and technical advice to the UK Government. “Members of the Institution are making a major contribution

to finding mechanical engineering approaches and solutions to the problems caused by COVID-19,” said Prof Joe McGeough, a past President of the Institution who leads the task force. “This manual brings together best practice across many

areas from around the globe. It highlights how engineers have worked to ensure that science is leading to practical solutions and also it considers how

ieland’s new HMI ECO touch panels have become essential for machines and systems in their use for visualisation, operation, and

diagnostics. When used in conjunction with the samos® PRO safety controller they offer complete automation, including seamless data exchange between the visualisation software hmiPLAN and the planning software samos® PLAN6. The unit offers flexible communication and seamless integration with over 40 different PLC and device manufacturers, including convenient data exchange of export and import functions.

This robust IP66 display is easily programmed via an Ethernet or USB client, while commissioning is quick having

only one project file, which is easily converted to suit each screen size. Designed for industrial environments, HMI ECO touch panels have an extended temperature range from -10°C to 60°C on standard panels with -20°C to 60°C supplied on request.

Easy to fit door arm is set to help reduce spread of virus E

mployers are typically keen to meet (and exceed) health and safety requirements and particularly so during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A new door opener is set to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus as well as other

common viral infections such as colds and flu, frequently spread by touching surfaces. In the UK the average number of sick days per business for minor illnesses such as colds,

flus, coughs and diarrhoea is 38.5 according to data from the Office of National Statistics. The impact of Covid-19 on people’s health plus the essential self-isolation period even

for people who may not have the virus, means that sickness figures this year are likely to rise.

UK Health and Safety law requires that employers do ‘what is reasonably practicable’ to protect their staff and

members of the public and carry out risk assessments to ensure they comply with the latest guidelines. These guidelines apply not just to traditional workplaces but also to staff working from home. Bristol businessman and entrepreneur Jeff Cox has come up with an intuitive solution to help ensure

environments such as workplaces, schools and restaurants are safer for employees and visitors alike. Euro Moulding 3D Solutions
