The tradition of passing down
The term ‘heirloom’ is increasingly used in the luxury marketplace as consumers seek to invest in quality items that are made to last a lifetime and beyond. Here’s what the term means to NORVEGR, the Stene family and the high-end bedding market. Three generations of the Stene family in Trondheim, Norway have been crafting tailor-made duvets to their unique design since 1956 so we could call the business as a whole an heirloom.

eiderdown to new generations begins with the eider duck. Unlike other down, eiderdown is plucked from the female eider’s breast to insulate her nest. This remarkable insulation is so effective that she can leave her eggs unattended for hours in the arctic conditions of Svalbard, trusting eiderdown’s ability to maintain a constant temperature. Through the ages, Nordic families have known the value of quality down and have learned to look after it. It has always been of such worth that it is often passed down from generation to generation. If the thought of spending a lifetime tucked up in your parent’s old duvet doesn’t appeal, don’t worry! Norvegr offers a regular restoration service which refills and recovers each duvet, returning it as good as new every ten years. Duvets: Classic collection,

A new nationwide study by BLACK+DECKER has revealed that 40% of homeowners are doing DIY jobs at the wrong time of year and with just 13% of those surveyed carrying out DIY tasks in November and December – experts have revealed three jobs to be doing now. Nick Ee, product and training manager at BLACK+DECKER comments: “There are several home improvement jobs that should be done in November as we head towards colder weather. This month, homeowners should prioritise giving outdoor spaces that last big tidy and clean up before they’re no longer in use and making preparations for the months ahead.”
1. Prep the garden for winter Preparing the garden for winter is essential to keep it healthy and ready for new growth when Spring comes around.
Nick adds: “Begin by tidying up
garden beds, cutting back perennials and removing and dead or decaying plants to reduce the risk of disease and pests. You’ll need a sharp pruning tool or lopper depending on the plant to make a clean cut to
As interest in sophisticated bedrooms soar, eco paint brand VICTORY COLOURS is on hand to offer inspiration to those considering an elegant transformation. Using data from Pinterest, Victory Colours found searches for ‘classy bedroom ideas’ and ‘luxury bedroom master’ have increased 100% and 70% respectively over the last month. Victoria Yardley, founder of Victory Colours, said: “The bedroom should be your own sanctuary, your place of retreat. And for those master suites lacking in aesthetic appeal, a new colour scheme will transform the look and feel of the entire space.” When it comes to choosing
colour, those looking for an opulent update should consider softer hues, according to Victoria.
She said: “Pastel hues have emerged as a popular choice for creating serene and inviting bedrooms. Their soft, calming tones can transform any space into a peaceful retreat.”
For minimalist spaces, sage greens such as Victory Colours’ Cloud Tree No.31, offer understated luxury,
remove dead branches and shape to encourage healthy growth. Another tip for protecting your garden this winter is to add a layer of mulch around trees, shrubs and garden beds which will help to insulate the roots, maintaining soil warmth and moisture throughout the colder months.”
2. Clean and store outdoor equipment Making sure garden furniture and tools are kept out the cold and away from moisture will help extends their life and keep them in good condition for the next season.
Nick continues: “If left outside in the cold wet weather, furniture and tools will start to rust, reducing their performance and so would need replacing, to avoid this I would recommend giving outdoor furniture a good clean with a pressure washer and covering up with covers once dry. If possible, store pieces indoors to protect them from the harsh weather. Gardening tools like string trimmers, lawn mowers and pressure washers should also be stored in a dry, sheltered area to prevent damage. The best place for gardening and power tools is the box they came in as they provide protection, and they’re clearly labelled so won’t get lost.”
3. Leaf and gutter maintenance One of the essential tasks to prepare for winter is clearing gutters and raking leaves to protect homes and lawns from seasonal hazards, such as blocked gutters and water damage, as temperatures start to drop.

especially when paired with natural wooden fixtures. A soft grey, such a Woolwinder No.36, will bring elegance and a touch of drama, without overwhelming the room. Soft greys work beautifully with other cool tones for a timeless touch.
For those homeowners looking to inject warmth into their classic bedroom scheme, a pale yellow, like Wild Honey No.40 or Arcadia No.38, is an ideal choice. And finally, don’t forget that all important fifth wall – aka the ceiling.
