SGLD in the Inspire Theatre The Society of Garden and Landscape Designers (SGLD) will once again be taking over the Inspire Theatre – which is in association with Hortus Loci Landscapes – at FutureScape, this year with a series of talks themed around ‘What Lies Beneath’. On Wednesday 8 October, the association – which rebranded earlier this year – will be hosting seminars that explore the essential but often unseen foundations of successful garden and landscape design. Award-winning garden designer Helen Elks-Smith FSGLD will be using examples of her own work to offer insight into site analysis, construction and aftercare, taking into account soils, trees, climate and native vs non-native plants. The SGLD council’s sustainability lead, Rachel Bailey MSGLD, will then be taking visitors through the new Elemental tool that launched in March. Her first session will take the audience behind the scenes, explaining what the tool is and why the industry needs it. She will then show how it can be used in practice to create gardens and landscapes that have a lower environmental impact. Bringing together the talks
throughout the day will be a panel discussion hosted by John Wyer FSGLD, who contributed to Elemental’s development. Elks- Smith and Bailey will return to the stage alongside Rupert Keys of TASK Academy and prolific garden designer David Stevens FSGLD for a wide-ranging conversation that moves between practical application, career development, and future- facing design thinking.
Business Theatre Tips on how to become more profitable and how to look after your employees will be at the heart of the Business Theatre in partnership with Joblogic at this year’s FutureScape. On Tuesday 7 October, The Insightful Collective’s Denise Quinlan will be advising garden designers on how to have more confident sales conversations so they
can spend more time doing what they love, whilst accountant Kim Sones will be sharing simple, actionable ways for small business owners to cut corporation tax. Visitors can also hear from award- winning companies on their journey to success. Oak View Landscapes’ Paul Downer will host a panel made up of the team from Karen McClure Garden Design to uncover insights into the studio’s decade of development, whilst Belderbos Landscapes’ Claire Belderbos will take the audience through the company’s transition to employee ownership. Pro Landscaper’s Nina Mason will then interview Wright Landscapes’ managing director Lee Webster and business development director Chris Blaisdale on how the company has gone from strength to strength, as well as its recent expansion into outdoor living and upcoming plans for a training academy.
Social media specialist Matt
Freestone will also be hosting a panel on converting clicks into clients, with experts such as Andy Stedman and Green Genie’s Jake and Ethan Thorne talking about how to get the most of your platforms.
