“Smart home security was named as the second most popular driver for the smart home and, with such a high demand created from the increased publicity and attention the smart home has received in recent years, the smart security market is set to be a very lucrative business in the coming years.” Croma Locksmiths & Security Solutions’ client relationship manager, Samantha Cleal thinks there is a huge market for smart technology due to how closely kept devices like smartphones are in every day life. She says: “Technology is growing fast and it is enhancing our daily choices of how we wish to control commercial areas or our own


personal effects inside and outside of our homes. Our phones are always with us so it makes sense to use the technology in some cases.” However, there seems to be a divide that exists around whether smart home technology will be suitable for mass-market adoption, with some retailers believing that smart technology is not fit for domestic use. Martin Richardson of Safeguard Locksmiths says: “People are starting to promote [smart technology] for domestic use and they don’t meet any standards; putting it on domestic is the last thing you’d want to be doing actually. People like Yale are promoting them for front doors for domestic houses and the trouble is, because there isn’t a standard for them, the insurance companies – if there was an incident – wouldn’t be covering them.” Meanwhile, ERA marketing and innovations director Will Butler
