Rising to the challenge
These current challenging and testing trading times for business call for caution, courage and creativity in equal measure. Rising inflation, increasing costs and high interest rates are producing a perfect storm that has the potential to wreak havoc within many industries and could hit the retail sector particularly hard. There is, however, the possibility that higher mortgage rates and the lack of available fixed rate deals could slow the housing market and encourage homeowners to consider improving, rather than moving, which of course will go some way towards insulating the DIY trade from this economic impact. So far the signs are encouraging, with most of the major DIY and hardware retailers
reporting growth and healthy profits for this year, and with Christmas fast approaching, they will be hoping to maintain this upward trend. With the final Covid restrictions now lifted and after another challenging twelve months, the signs are this Christmas should provide a strong trading period as people plan for bigger celebrations than they’ve been able to enjoy for the last couple of years. This is where the creative side of the industry comes in and I’ve witnessed some very clever ways in which independent
DIY retailers have maximised sales during the festive period, with some great displays and special offers. We’re looking forward to recognising these endeavours and celebrating the talent, innovation and success within the DIY retail industry at the DIY Week Awards once again next year. The categories will be announced and entries opened shortly, so watch this space for more information coming soon. In the meantime, I hope you find this issue interesting and inspiring.
