Save energy, money and the planet

As we face a major cost of living crisis at home, caused mainly by the rising cost of fuel and energy, globally we are facing a much bigger and more serious long-term challenge in the form of climate change. There is of course a link between these, as our increasing appetite for power necessities its production, which in turn produces more emissions that pollute the atmosphere, which then causes a rise in global temperatures and therefore an altered climate. It’s a vicious circle that needs to be broken before it’s too late and the catastrophic effects are irreversible. While governments and experts debate the best way to tackle this climate emergency, the people that can really make a difference, such as product designers,

engineers and manufacturers, are getting on with inventing new ways in which you and I can cut down on our energy use and look forward to not only saving money, but also a more sustainable future. The majority of topics we feature in this issue have a common theme of energy saving and sustainability running

through them. From stopping water leaks, turning off appliances and switching to energy saving light bulbs, to improving insulation and alternative ways of heating, there is a major focus on all these measures in much of what we cover. This just goes to show that the DIY industry is at the forefront of energy saving and is taking a proactive approach to helping consumers not only save money, but also do their bit for the planet. We will be celebrating many of these innovations and successes at the 2023 DIY Week Awards. Entries are already open and you can learn more online at www.diyweekawards.co.uk and on page 8 of this issue. In the meantime it just remains for me to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and peaceful new year.
